The hottest hotel openings of 2020


With just four months left of 2019 (yes, really), it’s time to start thinking about your 2020 holidays.

Will you go on a city break to Copenhagen? Perhaps spend your summer soaking up the Mallorcan sun? Or will you follow the trend and head to ever-popular Bali ? Whichever destination you choose, there are some sparkling new hotels to stay at while you’re there.

With a number of lovely hotels opening in 2020, we’ve curated a list of our favourites below.

Villa Copenhagen, Denmark

Opening: April 2020

Located within what was the century-old Central Post and Telegraph Head Office, Villa Copenhagen will hold a prime position next to the Danish capital’s famed Tivoli Gardens and the Meatpacking District. A member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, the hotel will offer a conscious approach to luxury with a focus on all things eco-friendly. Traditional Danish and international dining options will be available here and the space has been designed to promote wellbeing and sociability. They’ll be 390 rooms and suites in total. A new must-visit in the Danish capital.

Zedwell, London

Opening: February 2020

In 2020, London will welcome a ‘first of its kind’ sleep-centred hotel. With the tagline ‘Your key to calm in the heart of London’s busy Piccadilly’, Zedwell has been built entirely with sleep and wellness in mind and rooms are specifically designed to limit anxiety and distractions using innovative soundproofing and a gentle circulation of filtered air. With over 700 rooms, the hotel will be located in one of London’s most central areas – Leicester Square’s Trocadero.

Six Senses Fort Barwara, Rajasthan, India

Six Senses has a knack for taking something beautiful and making it shiny and new without disturbing any of the original beauty. This can be seen in one of the hotel group’s newest openings, Six Senses Fort Barwara which is set to open in Rajasthan, India next year. Located inside a converted 14th century fortress and found 110km southeast of Jaipur, the hotel will preserve the original fort structure while transforming it into a 48 suite hotel. With two swimming pools, a bar and lounge, spa, fitness centre, two restaurants and a kid’s club, the hotel will be the perfect place to escape – especially the spa with its extensive Ayurveda programme.

Xigera Safari Lodges, Okavango Delta, Botswana

Situated on the western side of the Moremi Game Reserve in the heart of the Okavango Delta, Xigera Safari Lodge is set to be Botswana’s most luxurious new offering. Billed to open in June 2020, just in time for the summer season, there will be just 12 rooms here all reimagining the safari experience. The design here is impeccable, with the bespoke assemblage of pieces taking 18 months to produce, so expect an array of lovely artwork, furnishings and fixtures all combining to create an opulent stay. The lodge is 100% solar powered and all rooms will have endless views over the floodplains.

Arctic Bath, Swedish Lapland

Located in Swedish Lapland, the Arctic Bath hotel will be a floating hotel open year-round – anchored freely in the summer months and frozen into the Lule River come winter. Just south of the Arctic Circle, the Arctic Bath is a natural spa retreat with a big focus on health and wellness. The unique design reflects the nature of northern Sweden and the centre of the building boasts an open-air cold bath – at just 4 degrees in the wintertime, it’s not for the fainthearted. This escape is aimed at couples with just six cabins on the property.

The Legian Sire, Lombok, Indonesia

This picture-perfect hotel is set to be your new favourite Indonesian hideaway for 2020. The Legian Sire is located on one of Lombok’s finest beaches, opposite the stunning Gili Islands. An all-suite and villa resort, The Legion Sire will have 45 suites and 15 pool villas overlooking the sparkling sea. Rooms are expansive, with luxe amenities and Pinterest-worthy fixtures.

The Londoner, London

Opening: April 2020

Sitting pretty in London’s legendary Leicester Square, the capital is welcoming a luxury addition to its West End scene. Locals will delight in The Londoner’s new rooftop bar as well as the urban spa deep in the basement. Décor is expected to be vibrant in the public areas with more calming rooms. With 15 levels boasting 350 rooms and 15 suites, the hotel will be expansive, also housing five restaurants and two new Odeon Luxe cinemas.

Hilton Garden Inn, Faroe Islands

The first international hotel brand to operate in the Faroe Islands, the Hilton Garden Inn Faroe Islands is set to open in the second half of 2020. Within walking distance of the harbour, the hotel will boast sea views and will place an emphasis on sustainability. With 131 rooms, a restaurant, shop, fitness centre and a spa, it’s certainly one to know when visiting these wild islands between Norway and Iceland.

Six Senses Shaharut, Negev Desert, Israel

Set to open in January 2020, Six Senses Shaharut will take up residence in the Israeli Negev Desert. Perched on a dramatic cliff with panoramic views of the desert, the hotel will offers suites and villas with the villas built from local rocks and pigments. The hotel, inspired by the natural landscape, will also utilise regional cacti and indigenous desert blooms as well as sourcing furnishings from local artists. The restaurant will be accompanied by a tented Bedouin dining experience and the spa will house a Six Senses signature Alchemy Bar. There will also be an indoor and outdoor pool, alongside a gym, yoga studio, nail bar, open-air cinema, kid’s club and a fully-functioning camel stables. Naturally, camel safaris are on offer.

Can Ferrerata, Mallorca

One of Europe’s most exciting new hotels for 2020, Can Ferrerata will open just in time for next year’s summer season on the ever-popular Spanish island of Mallorca. Located in the quaint, rural town of Santanyí, the hotel is set within a charming 17th century building with 31 individually designed suites and rooms. Home to a Mediterranean restaurant with a Mallorcan patio, the hotel will also boast two bars, a swimming pool, gym and hammam spa.

Bawah Reserve, Riau Archipelago, Indonesia

While the Bawah Reserve has been open since 2017, this eco-friendly resort located between Malaysia and Borneo is introducing new accommodation on the previously untouched island of Elang for 2020. The sustainably-minded suites on Elang have been created by Singaporean designer Sim Boon Yang, with interiors made from recycled natural materials and a number of the suites having private pools and direct sea access. Spend days here lazing on the beach or partaking in the activities included in the daily rate like snorkelling, boat tours, hiking and star gazing. On the main island, guests will also find a spa, open-air cinema and a number of restaurants.

Hotel Villa Dagmar, Stockholm, Sweden

Located in the vibrant and high end Stockholm neighbourhood of Östermalmstorg, Hotel Villa Dagmar will feature 70 stunning rooms and suites. Sister to the much-loved Hotel Diplomat, Villa Dagmar will have the Östermalmshallen food hall integrated into the hotel. Guests will also discover a spa, flower shop and a restaurant. Stay tuned.

ME Dubai, Dubai

Opening at the start of 2020, ME Dubai is situated in the striking Opus building in the heart of the up-and-coming Burj Khalifa district. Set to be an architectural icon in the Dubai skyline, it was designed by the late Zaha Hadid who designed both the exteriors and interiors to make her vision of interconnectedness come to fruition. With 132 guest rooms and suites, along with 39 serviced apartments, a rooftop bar, wellness centre and an award-winning Japanese restaurant, ME Dubai is the place to be seen in 2020.

Meliá Saïdia Residences, Saïdia, Morocco

Throwing open its doors at the start of 2020, Meliá Saïdia Residences will be a destination hotel for those who want to escape for a weekend. Located near Saïdia village, also known as ‘the Blue Pearl’, Oujda and Fez are also close by. Housing 192 apartments, suites and rooms, all with Moroccan décor, this all-inclusive hotel will have extensive facilities including a swimming pool, gardens, golf course and a marina where guests can partake in a range of water sports.

Raffles Udaipur, India and Raffles Bali, Indonesia

Two new Raffles properties are set two open in on-trend destinations: India and Bali. Raffles Udaipur will be the first Raffles for India. A palatial hotel which occupies its own private island in the middle of Udai Sagar Lake. A luxe 1,100 square metre spa will be found here alongside 101 luxury suites, a rooftop restaurant, swimming pool and sprawling gardens.

Raffles Bali will be located in Jimbaran Bay, perched on a hill with stunning ocean views. Each of the 32 villas will have its own private pool, and the property will be spread over 23 hectares, with a sprawling spa and restaurant.

The Guardsman, London

Opening: early 2020

Opening on London’s Buckingham Gate, The Guardsman is set to be a new luxury hotel with just 53 rooms. Promising to offer the ‘atmosphere, discretion and personal service usually associated with a private members club’, each of the individually designed rooms is unmistakably British with added touches like custom made furnishings and free standing bath tubs. The restaurant will be open to residents and guests only, with menus developed daily from seasonal produce selected from London markets and organic farms.

OZO Maldives, Maldives

Opening: late 2020

Just in case you needed another reason to visit the Maldives in 2020, ONYX Hospitality Group is opening a new OZO hotel in the honeymooner’s paradise. The new 200-villa private island resort will occupy the Raa Atoll and feature 60 over-water villas and 140 villas on the beach. Many villas will offer private plunge pools, while the resort will also have a strong focus on sustainability.
