Even though travel to many places is strictly off the menu, there are still plenty of ways to satisfy your inner traveller.

From golfing trips to Cyprus, to forward planning guides, here are some things to tide you over until your next getaway.

Golfing in Cyprus, from £283pp for five nights, departing Heathrow, with British Airways Holidays

Grab some winter sun and fun on the fairway in Cyprus. Aphrodite Hills Resort, just outside Paphos, is now a venue for the PGA European Tour.

You can play on its course or watch the pros at the Cyprus Open (Oct 29 to Nov 1) or the Cyprus Classic (Nov 5 to 8).

Alternatively, British Airways Holidays is offering packages from November 6 including a stay in a luxury villa with a Mediterranean sea view and a private or shared pool.

Decimo at The Standard, from £120pn.

It’s one way to beat the 10pm curfew – if you’re dining at stylish and sexy Spanish restaurant Decimo at London hotel The Standard and don’t want to face the crowds heading home, ask for the dessert menu.

Along with chocolate mousse, crème caramel and a cheese plate, you’ll find the option of ordering a room for the night for just £120 (underwear and toothbrushes included). Or, choose a suite with an al fresco bathtub and a private bartender.

Fright night at Drayton Manor, tickets from £8.50.

In honour of Halloween, family favourite attraction Drayton Manor Park is preparing for a scaring with new zoo experiences where the brave and the bold can get up close and personal with a range of reptiles and creepy-crawlies.

Among the not-so-cute critters you can meet is a Madagascan hissing cockroach, an albino giant land snail and a whip scorpion.

Snakes and lizards are a given and there’s also the chance to visit the park’s tarantula – should you want to, of course. Halloween activities run, unsurprisingly, until October 31.

Can’t stop thinking about your next big trip? Lose yourself in the glossy pages of the second edition of the Lonely Planet Ultimate Travel List for inspiration on the most incredible places and experiences in the world.

Top spot on the list of 500 places is the beautiful lost city of Petra in Jordan, a magnificent set of ancient edifices carved from red stone.

You’ll also find details of the extraordinary wildlife of the Galapagos Islands, the waterlogged delta of the Okavango in Botswana and the mind-bending vistas of the Salar de Uyuni – vast salt flats in Bolivia.
