Mauricio Pochettino was unable to say farewell to his Tottenham players in person and so left them a hastily written note after he was given his marching orders.

The north London outfit confirmed on Tuesday evening that Pochettino had been axed after five years in charge and Jose Mourinho was announced as the Argentine’s successor the following morning.

Proceedings have developed at such a rapid speed that Mourinho even oversaw his first training session on Wednesday ahead of the side’s trip to West Ham this weekend.

According to The Sun, chairman Daniel Levy’s decision to dismiss Pochettino so suddenly meant the manager could not say his goodbyes in the way he would have liked.

Instead, he left a classy message to Tottenham’s squad which read: ‘Sorry we cannot come to say goodbye, you are always in our hearts.’

It’s understood Pochettino had been in discussions with Spurs over the past week to find a resolution over his future.

However, talks ground to a halt when the ex-Southampton boss refused to accept Tottenham’s request to step down, which would have seen him miss out on £12million in compensation.

Pochettino’s coaching staff Jesus Perez, Miguel D’Agostino and Antoni Jimenez also departed in a remarkable 24 hours for the club.

Mourinho has vowed to bring ‘passion’ and ‘happiness’ back to Spurs after disastrous start to the season under his predecessor Pochettino.

‘I couldn’t be happier and look forward to the challenge,’ he said.

‘What can I promise? Passion, real passion.

‘Passion for my job, but also passion for my club, that’s the way I have been all my career and I want to try, obviously, everything to bring happiness to everyone who loves the club.’

He added: ‘Even as an opponent, there was always huge respect between me and the club.

‘I met you in cup finals, in semi-finals, in big matches and to keep that respect was probably in the back of my mind that one day I could be one of you.

‘It’s a privilege when a manager goes to a club and feels that happiness in relation to the squad he is going to have.

‘It didn’t happen many times. To be honest, the majority of the times we go to clubs and we always think “we like some, I don’t like enough” and you think immediately about what to do to change, what to do to make an approach between your ideas and the profile of the players.

‘This is a completely different case. I really like this squad.’
