THE Walking Dead’s Eugene finally got his radio up and running after salvaging parts from the fallen satellite.
The kooky engineer, played by Josh McDermitt, is known for his love of tinkering and has been on a one-man mission to restore some rudimentary technology to Alexandria in the zombie apocalypse.
This week’s episode saw a major breakthrough as he made contact with the mysterious Stephanie from an unknown community.
After getting romantically rejected by Rosita, Eugene has been feeling wounded, and the chat with a friendly stranger initially seemed to do him the world of good.
However, it became apparent that his enthusiasm to make a friend could leave Alexandria vulnerable as he proffered information about the community, despite Stephanie refusing to do so.
His face also dropped when he drew the conclusion he had been snubbed during a long pause towards the end of their conversation.
“I think Eugene’s not really thinking about getting a new community. Emotionally, he’s lonely, and there’s something that I really loved in the comic book that he was the one that was calling out, because here’s this character that has made some questionable decisions in the past, but grew to be a trusted person,” she explained.
“But he’s not always connected with people as deeply as everybody craves to connect. There’s a deep element of he just wants a human connection and he doesn’t exactly know what that might wind up being, but he feels, for a moment, he’s found a like-minded soul out there,” she continued to Entertainment Weekly.
“Because what are the chances that somebody else is just out on the open wave, hoping to find somebody?
“Of course, all the communities and the pragmatic things that come with that become a consideration, but he’s starting from very human place of ‘I just wish there was somebody out there for me.’”
Kang also heavily hinted that Stephanie is a member of the Commonwealth, a group that will be familiar to fans of the Robert Kirkman comics upon which the series is based.
When asked about the connection, she replied: “It certainly seems like that might be the case, right?”
Elsewhere in the chat Kang revealed how Carol lied about the Whisperer prisoner she brought back to camp with Daryl.
