The Haunting Of Bly Manor release date, plot and more

Was The Haunting Of Hill House a hit for Netflix? We may never know the real viewing numbers, as the streaming service doesn’t feel we deserve to find out (and maybe there’s a dark part of us that does indeed enjoy the ongoing Mystery Of The Figures) but you couldn’t throw a stone last year without hitting someone bent-neck-deep (sorry) in Mike Flanagan’s gothic horror series, so we think we can safely give the success of the first season a thumbs up. Shall we? Doing a thumbs up over here and hope you’re doing it, too.

If you enjoyed season 1 of The Haunting Of Hill House, the tragic Crain family tale that series creator Flanagan painstakingly weaved for Netflix over 10 episodes in 2018, you may be wondering if we’ll see any more of it. The good news is that, yes, the series will return, but it will be presented – as suspected – in an American Horror Story-esque anthology format, so season 2 is called The Haunting Of Bly Manor, with a whole new story afoot.

Here’s everything we know about it so far…

The Haunting Of Bly Manor release date

The second season is heading for a 2020 release date on Netflix, as confirmed by the official Twitter account:

An exact date in 2020 will be revealed later, and we’ll bring it to you when we get it.

The Haunting Of Bly Manor plot

The Haunting Of Hill House was an adaptation of the classic 1959 tome of the same name by Shirley Jackson, but season 2 will seek to give us a brand new version of Henry James’ The Turn Of The Screw, a novella first published in 1898, which features a governess who, caring for two children at a remote estate, becomes convinced that the grounds are haunted.

The Turn Of The Screw has been adapted about a trillion times over the years, and weirdly we’re about to get an influx of those adaptations. Not only is Netflix’s The Haunting Of Bly Manor going to bring us one, but Steven Spielberg’s Amblin is planning to release a horror movie called The Turning in January of 2020, starring It and Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard.

Freeform is also in the midst of getting a TV show based on The Turn Of The Screw up and running, albeit a modern take on the original novella.

The Haunting Of Bly Manor director

Mike Flanagan directed all of The Haunting Of Hill House episodes, an absolutely mammoth task for one man, but whether he’ll choose to repeat the process is unknown at this point. We do know that he and Netflix have finalised a deal that will lock Flanagan in with the streaming giant for a while, along with his regular wingman, Trevor Macy. The pair also previously worked on Gerald’s Game, Hush, Before I Wake, Ouija: Origin Of Evil and Oculus together.

“Netflix has been an important part of our story, and we’re proud to have worked with them on The Haunting Of Hill House, not to mention Gerald’s Game, Hush, and Before I Wake,” said Flanagan and Tracy in a statement. “They’ve enabled and supported a great deal of our work and we look forward to much more.”

Cindy Holland, Vice President, Original Content at Netflix, added:

“Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy are masterful at creating authentically frightening stories that leave audiences on the edge of their seats, but unable to look away. We’re excited to continue our partnership with them on The Haunting series and future projects to come.”

The Haunting Of Bly Manor cast

It’s very unlikely that we’ll see the Crain family from The Haunting Of Hill House in season 2, as Flanagan previously confirmed to TVLine:

“We tied up all of those threads exactly how they should be,” he said. “I don’t really see a need to revisit those characters, even in cameos.”

However, it remains to be seen whether the series will follow in the footsteps of American Horror Story and cast the same actors in different roles. If it chooses to go down this road, we could see the likes of Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, Elizabeth Reaser and Timothy Hutton again in season 2, with wildly different results.

Guigino recently spoke to The Wrap and teased her possible appearance in season 2, although in what capacity no one can be sure:

“I can’t say anything definitive at this point, other than Mike and I really love collaborating and working together and any opportunity where a schedule allows for us to do that, we will, and I would be honoured to… So we’re talking a lot about it and we’ll just see if all schedules allow. All I can say is I’m very excited for season 2 and to see what Mike does.”

We’ll keep you up to date with all the casting latest, regardless.
