The Handmaid’s Tale season 4: Will new series introduce Tabitha?

Season four of The Handmaid’s Tale is underway with the producers and the writers working on the new episodes. Following the publication of Canadian author Margaret Atwood’s novel The Testaments, which is set 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, the show could start to include material from the new book. If this is the case, viewers could start to see characters from the novel make their way onto the small screen adaptation.

Will The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 introduce Tabitha?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Testaments

The Testaments was published earlier this year and features three female narrators from both inside and outside Gilead.

The women speak about their lives and experiences with one of the narrators later confirmed to be June Osborne’s (played by Elisabeth Moss) eldest daughter Hannah Bankole (Jordana Blake).

Hannah – who has been renamed Agnes Jemima – lives with Commander Kyle and Tabitha, who serve as parent figures to her.

In the novel, Hannah speaks about her love for Tabitha, who always cared for her when she was younger.

She also describes her surrogate father Commander Kyle as a cold and unfeeling man.

During the course of The Testaments, Hannah shares a bedtime story Tabitha told her as a child.

In the tale, Tabitha and Hannah flee from monsters through the forest before making it to safety.

Hannah admits she has a vague memory of trying to escape from someone and running through the forest which she thought was Tabitha’s story.

However, it’s only later she realised the truth behind this recollection: Hannah and her parents were trying to flee to Canada and the monsters were Gilead officials coming after them.

Hannah has many fond memories of Tabitha – one instance saw the Wife protecting the child by telling her books were purely ornamental and in another instance they would play with a doll’s house.

In the TV show, June and Hannah failed to reunite with the Handmaid’s daughter given to a new family.

Could season four pick up with Hannah being raised by Tabitha and Commander Kyle?

A scene featuring Tabitha would make sense in the timeline of the series given Hannah has been separated from June.

Perhaps a scene depicting the doll’s house would make sense before the show cuts back to June in the aftermath of helping the children of Gilead to flee.

Similarly, the show could also see Baby Nicole living in Canada as she assigned to a group of Mayday activists who have been charged with protecting her.

MGM and Hulu have already confirmed plans to adapt to The Testaments for television, so it would make sense for the writers to start incorporating elements from the new novel into the show.

The small seeds would help to weave together the TV series and its corresponding source material.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 will air on Hulu and Channel 4 in 2020
