The Handmaid’s Tale season 3: Nick set for huge reveal in bombshell finale?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale, season three, episode 11.

The third season of The Handmaid’s Tale has seen the show take off with action packed episodes being released every week.

However, fans have been slightly disgruntled by the lack of appearance from Nick (Played by Max Minghella) who proved to be a major character in the first two seasons.

Fans will remember last season’s episode where they saw June (Elisabeth Moss) discover that Nick was part of the Sons of Jacob, the group responsible for the Republic of Gilead.

Last season saw the revelation that Nick was involved in the war that led to Gilead taking over the United States, and when fans finally meet Nick again in season three he had been promoted to Commander.

Suspicions that Nick is being held back for a dramatic finale were raised after previous episodes saw Emily (Alexis Bledel), Moira (Samira Wiley) and Luke (O-T Fagbenle) in Canada with no mention of Nick.

Furthermore, fans are beginning to speculate Fred (Joseph Fiennes) and Serena’s (Yvonne Strahovski) arrest for War Crimes at the Canadian border had something to do with Nick.

In conversation with Den of Geek after episode six aired, the Nick star hinted his character is alway plotting.

Max said: ”I do think that Nick is always one step ahead of where you think he is.

“He’s certainly one step ahead of where I am as a reader or an audience member, and I think that becomes very clear in season three.

“Not all is as it seems. He’s quite strategic and cunning.”

Could Nick be teaming up with the Canadians?

Furthermore, fans suspect Serena could also be behind the arrest as she was lead away in a separate car to her partner.

The arrest came as a shock to fans as over the course of the trip, Serena had softened to Fred and the couple seemed to be making progress.

Fans will remember the pair had spent the night at a Gilead family cabin where they discussed their pasts and where they would be if they never embarked on the dangerous mission of resistance.

The episode saw Fred undergo a character development as he even admitted he never realised how difficult Serena’s life would become.

So why would Serena plot for his arrest when the pair seemed to be back on track?

Although this has not been confirmed just yet, the episode does leave a few clues that suggest Serena will not be joining him in the cells.

Firstly, although Serena was lead away by Canadian soldiers, she was never actually arrested and given her rights as we saw in Fred’s case and seemed noticeably calmer.

Furthermore, it is Serena’s contact Mark Tuello (Sam Jaeger) who carries out the arrest and Mark makes it very clear Fred is the target when reading out his rights as Serena’s name is never mentioned.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 drops weekly on Hulu on Wednesdays and airs on Channel 4 in the UK every Sunday at 9pm.
