The Handmaid’s Tale season 3: Luke to lose Nichole after Serena Joy betrayal heartbreak?

The Handmaid’s Tale has already ramped a few things up this season.

Just five episodes in and viewers are witnessing June (played by Elisabeth Moss) being paraded onto a stage to make a public plea.

However the latest episode saw Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) finally coming to the conclusion she wants baby Nichole back – at any cost.

After going along with June’s plan for so long, she eventually turned, and is now looking to get her daughter back once and for all.

Serena star Yvonne recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about her character’s shocking turn of events, and about how it may affect future events in the show.

Beginning by discussing the latest twist, she said: “It’s awful.

“We’ve seen June planting some seeds in Serena’s mind about how she can become a part of the resistance, throughout episodes one through five.

“It’s a huge backfire moment, because she’s using her power and the power that June has inspired her to see she still has, to just let her heart win and decide that she just wants Nichole back. It’s such a selfish move. “

Yvonne went on to explain that, deep down, Serena knows why she gave away her baby in the first place – to protect her – but it doesn’t matter in that moment, as all she wants is her child back.

Yvonne continued: “That scene at the airport informs so much of her decision. It’s so overwhelming for her. It’s just kind of awful.”

She also joked that any viewers who still hold sympathy for Serena would have lost it all by now after her latest actions.

But Serena’s actions may have larger repercussions in the show, as Luke (O. T. Fagbenle) is currently looking after baby Nichole/Holly after Emily (Alexis Bledel) brought her to him.

As Luke currently has no real blood ties to the baby, he could be at risk of losing her back to the Waterfords before June gets back.

If so, how would June react if her baby was brought back to Gilead after she worked so hard to get her out?

Recently June star Elisabeth spoke to Hollywood Reporter about the second half of the season.

The actor teased that the season will be delving into a completely new territory further into the show.

She said: “There’s a real change in the second half of the season that is pretty huge, character-wise.

“It allowed me to do some things as an actor with June that I think are going to be really surprising and pretty extreme.

“We’re asking the audience to come with us on this ride. But what we’re trying to do – and what I’m trying to do – is show the person that you would become.”

The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 continues on Wednesdays on Hulu and continues Sunday at 9pm on Channel 4.
