The Hallmark Channel personality, 50, made the revelation on his Instagram page in a post Tuesday in which he opened up about the diagnosis and surgery he has scheduled this week.

‘About a month ago, I had an MRI for some gut issues I’ve been having, and during that MRI they found a tumor on my right kidney,’ the Sarnia, Canada native wrote. ‘It’s consistent with Renal Cell Carcinoma… or kidney cancer.’

Mathison said that the cancer ‘hasn’t spread to any other organs’ as doctors told him that his ‘healthy lifestyle and diet has no doubt helped keep it from growing and spreading’ in at least 10 years it’s been in his body.

‘I am extremely lucky that we found it early,’ said Mathison, who has been married to wife Vanessa Arevalo since 2002 and is father to children Lucas, 16, and Leila, 13, with her. He said his wife and kids ‘have been absolutely amazing with their love and support,’ as well as his parents and brother.

He thanked his longtime friend and urologist Jonathan Giddens for helping him tremendously through this process, as well as his professional contacts at Home and Family, Hallmark, and ET.

Mathison said that his surgery is slated for Thursday at 1pm PT, adding that he ‘was hoping to receive positive thoughts, prayers, or whatever you feel comfortable with.’

‘I announced this on @homeandfamilytv yesterday, and wanted to make sure I posted about it here as well,’ Mathison said. ‘Feeling very grateful and optimistic!!’
