The Grudge: first trailer arrives for 2020 horror reboot

Thought creepy, long-haired ghost lady Kayako had been exorcised from our screens? Well, think again: The Grudge is being rebooted once again, and now we have our first look at the latest in the long-running series of curse-powered horror flicks.

Once again produced by genre champions Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert, this new Grudge is a reimagining of the mythos, featuring a whole new cast but apparently taking place in the same timeline as the 2004 film starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (itself a US remake of the Japanese Ju-On series).

This time, it’s Brit actress Andrea Riseborough (Mandy, The Death Of Stalin) who finds herself the target of the titular evil. She plays detective Muldoon, who discovers that a suburban house is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death – but only after she’s gone and entered it. Typical. It’s not long before she’s trapped in a race against time to save herself and her young son from the demonic spirits that have set their sights on her – led by the aforementioned croaky-voiced wraith, Kayako.

You can watch the trailer below…

Written and directed by rising-star filmmaker Nicolas Pesce (who made Sundance-favourite horrors The Eyes Of My Mother and Piercing), the film’s cast is rounded out by Demián Bichir (Alien Covenant), Betty Gilpin (GLOW), Lin Shaye (Insidious) and Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom).

Star Trek‘s John Cho co-stars as an estate agent who’s also cursed by the haunted house, leading to a familiar-looking – and still creepy – scare in the shower. What is it with these ghosts and their obsession with personal hygiene, eh?

The Grudge will be spooking up UK cinemas on 31 January 2020.
