The gown Princess Diana wore to dance with John Travolta at the White House is to be auctioned

For those you weren’t privy to the popular culture happenings of 1985, there was one notable event where Diana, Princess of Wales danced at the White House.

During a dinner hosted by Ronald and Nancy Reagan on November 9, Diana was swirled across the dance floor by actor John Travolta.

Admittedly, all eyes were on the Princess as she was swung around by Travolta in what would today be an undoubtedly viral moment.

But it wasn’t necessarily her dancing skills which garnered attention, it was her flowing royal blue Victor Edelstein gown which really stole the show.

And now the velvet gown is going up for auction, with the off-the-shoulder ensemble expected to sell for somewhere in the region of £250,000 to £350,000.

Princess Diana later wore the dress again during a state visit to Austria in 1986, and for a night at the Royal Opera House in 1991.

Two months before her unfortunate death in June 1997, Diana auctioned off the dress for £100,000 to raise money for the Royal Marsden Hospital Cancer Fund and the AIDS Crisis Trust.

Two other items from Princess Diana’s wardrobe will also be auctioned; a custom Katherine Cusack evening gown (which is estimated to sell for between £20,000 to £30,000) and a Catherine Walker navy wool dress (which is estimated to sell for between £4,000 to £6,000.)

The auction, which is called Passion for Fashion, will take place on December 9 with Kerry Taylor Auctions.
