The Good Liar filming locations: Where was Ian McKellen movie filmed?

The Good Liar shows veteran actors Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Helen Mirren in a whole new light. The movie follows McKellen’s Roy as he tries to swindle a wealthy widow (played by Mirren) after finding her on a dating site. The movie is shot in some iconic landmarks – but where are the filming locations?

Those living in the UK do not have far to go to visit the filming locations for The Good Liar, as the whole movie was filmed here, with a great deal taking place in London.

One of the locations outside of the Big Smoke includes Gaddesden Place in Hertfordshire, a grand manor house who interiors were used to shoot scenes in the home of Hannalore Schroder, played by Lily Dodsworth Evans.

Some may recognise the house from Jonathan Creek or Foyle’s War, and the extraordinary house will most certainly been seen again in a period drama near you.

As well as this, Bovingdon Airfield in Hertfordshire were also used to film some of the historic action used in flashback scenes to 1949, and the special effects were put into place here to add the feeling of authenticity.

However, some of these flashbacks were shot on location in Berlin, making it the only location in the film outside of the UK.

In London, where a great deal of the filming took place, locations such as Hatchards, London’s oldest bookshop, were used, as well as Piccadilly Pavement to recreate the moment where they are standing outside Fortnum and Mason.

The Olympic Cinema in Barnes was used for the cinema scenes, while other exterior shots were filmed on Earlham Street in Seven Dials.

Charing Cross station’s tube exit at Trafalgar Square was included in the film, as well as The Railway in Teddington, which was used as both a gastropub and a station for shooting, meaning their travel was certainly in style.

What is The Good Liar about?

According to New Line Cinema, who are releasing the movie, the synopsis reads: “Career con artist Roy Courtnay (McKellen) can hardly believe his luck when he meets well-to-do widow Betty McLeish (Mirren) online.

“As Betty opens her home and life to him, Roy is surprised to find himself caring about her, turning what should be a cut-and-dry swindle into the most treacherous tightrope walk of his life.”

Other cast members include Russell Tovey, Jim Carter, Mark Lewis Jones, making this a must-see for fans of UK talent.

The Good Liar is in cinemas on November 8
