Lead character Shaun (Freddie Highmore) pulled Claire up for flirting with Neil all the way back in season one.

Two seasons on, the show’s writers have fanned the flames of their romance again in the most recent episode which aired on Monday.

At the very beginning of the episode, the husband of a former patient who died came to see Claire at the hospital.

The pair are excited to see each other and share a warm embrace.

But the camera then pans to Neil, who looks on with either jealousy or lament as he walks away.

Fans took to social media with their theories about the exchange: “There’s a reason for that ending shot focusing only on Neil’s reaction, showing his jealously and I also felt some protectiveness,” one speculated.

Love between the couple might be a long way off as Neil is very pragmatic about relationships.

“I don’t think you make anyone fall in love with you, Shaun. It unfolds naturally over time,” Neil said in the show.

Melendaire fans definitely want the two doctors to get together, but understand they need a bit more patience.

One Twitter user wrote of Neil’s wisdom: “Melendez pretty much summed up his relationship with Claire without knowing it. Them together makes so much sense and they’ll eventually realize that love.”

Episode 17 of the third season was one full of heartbreak as Shaun became inconsolable when Lea (Paige Spara) rejected him after he confessed his love for her.

Wrapped in a cosy blanket on his couch, Shaun is feeling very sorry for himself.

Many of his friends and colleagues try to console him including his mentor, Dr. Glassman (Richard Schiff) who explained: “What you’re going through, every other young man has gone through.”

While Claire simply said to him: “I’m sorry she hurt you.”

Season 3, episode 18 of The Good Doctor airs on ABC on Monday at 10 p.m.

This is the last episode before the two-part season 3 finale.
