The biggest video games award show of the year has listed the titles that have a chance to be crowned the best of 2023, in 31 categories.
The Oscars of the gaming industry has finally revealed the categories and games that are in contention this year, from Best Game to Best Content Creator, in an impressively competitive year of new releases.
Last year, The Game Awards saw Elden Ring get the best of God Of War Ragnarök for Game of the Year, while Stray won Best Indie Game.
This year, sequels including Baldur’s Gate 3, Spider-Man 2, and Alan Wake 2 dominate the nominations, while fans cross their fingers for more GTA 6 news.
In all there are 31 awards up for grabs, with the Game of the Year category being particularly hard fought:
- Alan Wake 2 (Remedy Entertainment/Epic Games Publishing)
- Baldur’s Gate 3 (Larian Studios)
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (Insomniac Games/SIE)
- Resident Evil 4 (Capcom)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Nintendo EPD/Nintendo)
- The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom (Nintendo EPD/Nintendo)
Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 have racked up no less than eight nominations each, Spider-Man 2 has seven. Bethesda’s Xbox exclusive Starfield, on the other hand, is only nominated for best role-playing game.
Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which we reviewed as a game of the year contender, has gained five nods from The Game Awards.
The ceremony isn’t just about awards, however, as it’s commonly used by publishers – including Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo – to announce news about upcoming games.
Naturally, GTA 6 is a hot topic this year, as Rockstar recently revealed that the first trailer for their long-awaited sequel will be released in ‘early December’.
The Game Awards will be hosted in Los Angeles, from 1am GMT on December 8. You’ll see it listed for December 7, from America’s point of view, but it’s technically the next day in Europe.
The games are selected by a committee of video game news organisations, including us, and voted on by fans and critics (weighted 90% in favour of critics). Fans can already vote on the games on the Game Awards website.
