As much as I am relieved that brow bars are open, getting into central London to my trusty salon is no meant feat right now. In lieu of being able to pop to get my brows threaded on my lunch break, I have been attempting to master the art of at-home brow grooming.
I’ve nailed tweezing, tried (and failed) threading, and stocked up on a plethora of brow products to help me achieve defined brows at home. Now I’m armed with the tools, I need some actual tips and tricks for at-home brow grooming.
Thankfully, Celia Burton, Makeup Artist for Glossier, is on hand with a new brow trend we’re dubbing ‘fluff brows’ – deliciously defined, full and fluffy brows that are so simple to achieve at home.
The trend actually stemmed from Celia’s own experience in lockdown. “Around mid-April, as I had just gotten the hang of lockdown I realised that, for the first time since my early teens, I had entirely forgotten to tend to my eyebrows. They had grown freely across my face with very little shape or definition. I decided to leave them to it and re-evaluate later.
“Come June, I returned to the mirror to reassess. They didn’t look that bad. I decided to remove only the strays underneath, and leave the new length and depth,” she explained.
“Now that I spend most of my days on set in personal protective face equipment, I’m very happy that I had the time to reset and regrow my eyebrows. They’re more important than ever, no one’s lip reading any more, we’re brow reading. So, in conclusion – full, fluffy, naturally defined brows are here to stay… right?”
Here are all the expert tips and tricks you need to be armed with to get the look at home…
Define: To define a brow I like to have the following to hand; 1 or 2 shades of brow fill, a clear gel to fix and a spoolie. I brush the brows with the spoolie upwards at the front and outwards as I move down to the tail end, assessing what needs to be done to elevate and define the shape. Boy Brow is my best friend at this point. I like to layer the Boy Brow shades, gradually, to get the colour just right. For instance; for strawberry blondes, I apply a few strokes of Blond, a bit of Auburn on top and sometimes even finish it off with the clear Boy Brow to fix.
Clean up: If it feels like there’s too much product in the brow, or the hairs look a bit clogged, I use a flat brow brush (looks like a toothbrush) or just my ring finger to press the hair onto the face, brushing out any excess product and fixing the hairs in place at the same time.
Add some oomph: For the more sparse brow, where Boy Brow alone doesn’t quite cut it, I love the effect of a brow pen – such as Glossier’s Brow Flick. the fine brush tip replicates the brow hair perfectly, adding dimension and depth. Leave to dry for about 10 seconds and then secure with a brow gel.
