The five best ways to save space and declutter without breaking the bank

WE have become a nation of hoarders.

According to online storage platform Stashbee.com, one in five of us needs extra storage space but cannot afford it due to increasing costs.

If your house is feeling a bit cramped, here are ways to save space . . . and cash.

WHEN TWO BECOME ONE: Everyday objects can double up as storage. Dining table chairs could be swapped for a storage bench that’s also a seat. A dressing table chair could become a storage stool.

Pick up the John Lewis Anyday grey storage cube ottoman, now £10.50, reduced from £15.

SWITCH UP THE SEASONS: From garden furniture and toys to your wardrobe, only keep out what you need for the season. Spring is the perfect time to put away chunky winter knits and coats, making space for lighter clothing.

Store items in a vacuum bag; Lakeland has a jumbo version for £24.99 but Wilko has two large bags for £7.50.

OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND: Keep clutter hidden by storing items under the bed. At Homebase, a 50L tub is £15, but at B&Q, the same-sized tub is half the price for £7.50. No space under the bed? You could stack these in a wardrobe or garage.

ADD A LITTLE EXTRA: Too much crockery or feel overwhelmed with trying to organise the weekly shop? Pick up some under-shelf metal baskets for the kitchen.

You can also store teabags and coffee in the basket, hooked on to the shelf where you keep the mugs. Get an Observator basket for £3 at Ikea, instead of around £7 elsewhere.

Over-the-door hooks are also great for wardrobes — get a three-pack of hooks for just £3 at Dunelm and hang dressing gowns on the inside of your bedroom door.

BED DOWN: Bedding and sheets always take up so much space. But sort the bedding into sets and fold neatly into the matching pillowcase. This means you also won’t need to pull everything out to find the correct sheet in future, creating more clutter.
