Amazon has renewed science fiction show The Expanse for a fifth season.

The announcement was made at the Television Critics Association on July 27 as part of the summer press tour, ahead of the launch of season four in December.

The show is based off the book collection by the same name written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck.

Starring Shohreh Aghdashloo, Steven Strait and Dominique Tipper, The Expanse is set hundreds of years in the future where humans have colonised the solar system.

It aired three seasons on SyFy before being cancelled, with Amazon then picking up the rights to the show.

Speaking of the move to Amazon, showrunner Naren Shankar said: ‘We’re no longer bound by the archaic content, language, and run time restrictions you’re constantly forced to deal with on broadcast and basic cable

‘The shows on Amazon Prime speak for themselves: this is a platform that values complex, layered storytelling, and we’re thrilled to be on it — it’s the perfect home for The Expanse.’

The show has been developed by Academy Award-nominated writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, and has since won a Hugo Award.

With season four soon to air, the synopsis for the ten episode series reads: ‘The fourth season begins a new chapter for the series with the crew of the Rocinante on a mission from the UN to explore new worlds beyond the Ring Gate.

‘Humanity has been given access to thousands of Earth-like planets which has created a land rush and furthered tensions between the opposing nations of Earth, Mars and the Belt.

‘Ilus is the first of these planets, one rich with natural resources but also marked by the ruins of a long dead alien civilization. While Earthers, Martians and Belters maneuver to colonize Ilus and its natural resources, these early explorers don’t understand this new world and are unaware of the larger dangers that await them.’

The Expanse series four begins December 13 on Amazon Prime.
