From space combat game Spacewar! to virtual reality games, video games have indeed come a long way.

Today, over two billion people play video games worldwide and the video gaming revenue reached a new peak of $43.8 billion in 2018.

Young as well as adult players now want HD graphics and love playing casino games, such as the game of Roulette.

It’s obvious that video games have been around for two decades, but their history traces back to the 1950s when computer technology was taking baby steps to change the world around us.

This blog will give you an insight into the history of video games.

The early years of gaming

In the 1950s, academic computer scientists started designing simple games and simulations. With the introduction of the IBM 1560 computer in 1960, professors and students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) started playing games, such as 3D tic-tac-toe and Moon Landing.

The first gaming system for commercial use emerged three decades later in 1967. Ralph Bear and his team designed a prototype called Brown Box, a vacuum tube that was connected to the Television set and allowed two players to control the cube that chased each other on the screen.

The newly developed prototype could be programmed to play a variety of games such as ping pong, checkers and four sports games.

Earlier arcade video games

With the release of electro-mechanical games in the late 1960s, Sega and Taito were the first two companies to introduce arcade gaming to the public.

In 1972, Atari became the first company to prompt great enthusiasm among people and set the standard for the broader gaming community.

In 1978, Taito released Space Invaders, a fixed shooter game in which the player controls a laser cannon by moving it horizontally across the bottom of the screen and firing at descending aliens. The period between 1978 to 1982 was the golden age of video games.

Early home computer games

Home computers began evolving rapidly in the 1980s, allowing their owners to program simple games. Popular games such as Frogger, Space Invaders, Donkey Kong and Pac-Man were being distributed through a variety of channels.

Developers printed the source code in books as well as magazines, which allowed users to type the code for themselves. Games were also distributed to the users by the physical mailing and selling of floppy disks, cassettes and ROM cartridges.

The modern age of gaming

Since the 2000s, fast internet and improved hardware have led to the development of games that are better than their previous versions.

Online app stores have totally changed the way players buy and update their games. Online networking services have helped multiplayer gaming reach a new peak.

Nowadays, most online games have an online component that improves interconnectivity and offers a seamless gaming experience.

The rapid advancement in technology over the last decade has created an explosion of mobile gaming in the industry. New complex multiplayer games are connecting millions of players around the world through their mobile device.
