The Decathlon: Koepka retains US PGA Championship title, Chadwick joins Williams, Nadal crushes Djokovic


1. Koepka retains his title

Brooks Koepka successfully defended the US PGA Championship title after finishing two shots clear of Dustin Johnson at Bethpage Black.

The 29-year-old, who is now a four-time major winner, revealed that he was boosted by the fans’ support for world No.1 Johnson.

Koepka said: “I’m glad to have this trophy back in my hands. With the ‘DJ’ chants, I was aware of what was going on. He did an unbelievable job of putting pressure on me.

“When they started chanting for DJ on the 14th, it actually helped. It helped me focus. I think it was the best thing that could’ve happened.”

2. 50 goals for Messi

Lionel Messi scored his 49th and 50th goals in all competitions for Barcelona this season as the Catalans drew 2-2 at Eibar in their final La Liga match of 2018-19. Messi’s 36 goals in 38 league games secures him the ‘Pichichi’ award for La Liga’s top scorer. It’s the third season in a row he has won the Pichichi and he has equalled Telmo Zarra’s record of six.

3. Maguire to replace Kompany?

Vincent Kompany’s departure has left a giant hole in Manchester City’s defence and squad for next season. With Kompany taking over as player-manager of Belgian side Anderlecht who could City target to replace their captain? According to reports Leicester and England defender Harry Maguire is Pep Guardiola’s No.1 choice.

4. Nadal is favourite for French title

King of clay Rafael Nadal has sent a warning to his rivals ahead of the French Open grand slam which starts this weekend at Roland-Garros. Nadal was in superb form as he crushed Novak Djokovic in the final of the Italian Open. Djokovic said: “Nadal [is the] number one favourite, without a doubt. And then everyone else.”

5. Fans call for Wilder-Joshua bout

Boxing fans are calling for a heavyweight showdown between Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua. WBC champion Wilder was in supreme form at the weekend with a first-round knockout of Dominic Breazeale in New York.

6. England seal ODI series win

England will head into the Cricket World Cup in confident mood after completing a 4-0 victory against Pakistan in the one-day international series. England name their World Cup squad on Tuesday ahead of the opening match against South Africa at The Oval on 30 May.

7. Amir gets Pakistan call up

Pakistan have named their 15-man squad for the Cricket World Cup and there’s a spot for pace bowler Mohammad Amir.

8. McLaren won’t buy Indy 500 spot for Alonso

McLaren and Fernando Alonso have failed to qualify for Sunday’s Indianapolis 500. It had been suggested that McLaren may buy a rival team’s entry for the race, but CEO Zak Brown said: “We’ll come back fighting. We don’t want to buy in. We want to earn it. Anyone can buy in. We want to get in on merit.”

9. Mixed emotions for England team-mates

England footballers Lucy Bronze and Toni Duggan had mixed emotions in the Women’s Champions League final at the weekend. Bronze’s Lyon were 4-1 winners against Duggan’s Barcelona in the final in Budapest. French side Lyon won their fourth title in a row and Bronze said: “I think she [Duggan] played well but obviously it’s unfortunate that we both can’t win. I just grabbed her and said we would just win the World Cup together instead.”

10. Chadwick joins Williams Academy

British female racing star Jamie Chadwick has joined the Williams Academy as a development driver.

The 21-year-old, who is currently racing in the W Series, said: “It is a great honour to be joining the Williams Racing Driver Academy. The time in the simulator is a fantastic opportunity to aid with my development.

“I look forward to spending time in the factory at Grove, immersing myself within the team and assisting wherever I can. Being a part of the Driver Academy is an amazing platform and I’m excited to get started.”
