The curly bob is the haircut everyone's going to be rocking in 2020 – and these stars are already leading the trend

We can’t move for bob hairstyles right now. From Kaia Gerber and Lily James to Saoirse Ronan, whether it’s the collarbone bob or or a blunt cut, the most stylish stars are going for the chop this month.

The latest star to rock a bob hairstyle is Millie Bobby Brown, who unveiled a shorter ‘do this week. Rather than a sleek look, the actress and activist plumped for a curly bob and single-handedly made it the hairstyle of the season.

As Jay Birmingham, celebrity hairdresser and owner of Jay Birmingham Hair, explains, Millie is bang on trend. “2020 is the major bob movement, long hair simply isn’t that interesting anymore,” he said. “This undone, modern and messy chic bob rocked by Millie Bobby Brown has messy-chic ‘off duty model’ vibes to it. It’s flirty and edgy, yet still classic and I simply love her textured tresses.”

GLAMOUR columnist, Larry King, agrees. “The curly bob is the absolute perfect hairstyle if you’ve got a natural wave or curl. It’s cute, feminine and fun. It also feels fresh compared to all the beach waves we’ve seen in recent years.”

If you want to take the chop, Larry advises asking your hairdresser to cut it from wet to dry. “This means they cut the main length wet and then the shape forms as the curls are drying naturally round the face. Don’t let the hairdresser use thinning scissors because they’ll just create frizz.”

How to maintain the curly bob look at home

When styling your curly bob at home, start with wet hair. Larry suggests using a good curl creme like Redken’s Curvaceous Ringlet Anti-frizz Perfecting Lotion and diffusing with a Dyson Supersonic set on a high heat low speed setting. Dry with your head tipped upside down.

“Next, point the hairdryer all the way down to the ends to smooth them out, but avoid smoothing it out too much before you curl as it will give a more edgy look”, says Jay.

“How do you get your curls like that?” Probably the number one question I’m asked about my hair when I’m out and about. And to be honest, it’s still hard to get used to since I spent most of my adult life just trying to tame it. Straighteners were my best friend. But I had to go through a lot of trial and error, to get to where my hair is now. ⚡️So here are my top tips on taming your natural curl⚡️ 1️⃣ Get some decent products. Ditch the silicones and sulfates among other things. But these two are the worst for curly hair. Because sulfates are the harsh detergents in shampoos. They give you that nice lather, but it’s stripping your natural oils and drying your hair out. Silicones, are basically plastics. They are hidden in tons of hair products to give you added shine to make your hair appear healthy, but it really just coats your hair because they’re not water soluble. And they suffocate your hair and scalp, not allowing nutrients or moisture in. Which curls especially need. 2️⃣ You gotta quit the heat styling. At least for a while. Because think about it, every time you use heat, you’re training your curls to go against their natural pattern. If you’ve been doing this a while, you’ll have to retrain your natural pattern. 3️⃣ Deep conditioning treatments. Curls typically need more moisture (aka oils) than other hair types. So conditioners and hair masques are important. Not all oils are created equal though, and most will just sit on top your hair. Find one that nourishes at the same time. 4️⃣ Ditch the terry cloth towels, and sleep with a silk pillowcase. Microfiber towels or a soft T-shirt will work much better to dry your hair. Google “plopping” this drying technique will lessens frizz and restore your natural curl pattern. And silk will cause less friction (causing less frizz and breakage), and won’t absorb your natural oils while you sleep. 5️⃣ Have patience. It’s a process getting your hair healthy again. And no two curls are exactly alike, so there may be some trial and error at the beginning. But once you figure out what works, then people will be commenting and asking you how you get your curls that way ? Have more questions? Send me a DM!

Once dry, define curls with Larry King A Social Life For Your Hair Finishing Cream. Next up is the curling process, the key step. To achieve loose, textured waves, take a curling iron and curl sections of different thickness, and alternate the direction of the curls with some curling towards your face, while others should curl away. And finally: leave the ends out. This is key to getting a lived-in, wavy texture.

Voila.
