Emma has been seen on the show’s set several times in recent weeks with Josh O’Connor as she is set to make her debut.

On Monday, the on-screen couple were rumoured to be filming scenes recreating Prince Charles’ birthday outing in 1987.

Viewers got their first glimpse of O’Connor as the Prince of Wales when series three of The Crown dropped last year, covering the years 1964 to 1977.

It is believed series four will take the story the Monarchy up to the end of Margaret Thatcher’s 11 years in power and closely follow Prince Charles and Diana’s relationship.

Their engagement became official on 24 February 1981 and created a media frenzy. Following the engagement, Diana left her occupation as a nursery assistant.

X Files star Gillian Anderson has been cast as Britain’s first female Prime Minister, but precise details of the storylines are being kept under wraps.

However, one insider told The Mail on Sunday the season will be ‘merciless’ in its portrayal of the collapse of Charles and Diana’s marriage.

Shortly after it was announced that she would be playing Diana, Emma took to social media, looking slightly overwhelmed with the media attention she has received since her casting was announced earlier this year.

Referencing the spotlight she now finds herself under, Emma shared a snap of her bewildered expression while she stood above various tabloids, opened to the generally positive news of her casting as the tragic Princess.

Captioning the shot, the Cesare star wrote: ‘What a week! Thank you for the love!’
