Who plays Princess Anne in The Crown season 3?
The latest season of The Crown reintroduces a number of members of the Royal family with a new story set later in Queen Elizabeth II’s career.
This includes the introduction of the Queen’s children as adults rather than how they’ve previously appeared as children in the show.
Taking on the role of Princess Anne is up-and-coming actress Erin Doherty with fans getting a brief glimpse of in the trailer.
The actor is best known for playing Fabienne in the BBC adaptation Les Misérables earlier this year.
She has also played Jessie Marsh in Call the Midwife in a one-off episode, but this will be the actor’s first major television role.
Princess Anne is the second child and only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip and is currently 14th in line to the throne.
Known best for her charity work as well as sporting prowess, she was the first member of the British Royal Family to compete in the Olympic Games for equestrian sports.
The series will focus on the period from 1964 until 1977 when Anne was growing up in the royal household.
Around this time, she began dating Andrew Parker Bowles, who went on to become the first husband of Camilla Shand, who is now married to Prince Charles.
The princess later became engaged to Mark Phillips in 1973 and the pair married later that year.
Another episode of her life the series could focus on was the attempted kidnap of her and her husband in 1974 on Pall Mall, which while unsuccessful, injured a number of people.
When the news was first announced, Doherty said: “To be a part of The Crown feels both ridiculously special and surreal.
“There is such a rare dynamic within Princess Anne that I am incredibly grateful to be able to explore.
“She is a woman of great strength and heart – I feel privileged to fight her corner.”
Doherty also recently spoke to The Telegraph about playing the well-known character in the upcoming series of the show.
She said: “You know what happens to Anne. It’s not hard to guess.
“But Peter Morgan [showrunner] makes these people so fascinating because of the way he focuses on stories which might not have been the headlines everyone remembers.”
The actor also revealed she didn’t know much about the history of the woman before she got to part.
She added: “Princess Anne, honestly, didn’t mean anything to me. Like a lot of people who grow up in Britain, I think, [the Royal family was] always just there.
“My family watched the Queen’s speech at Christmas, but other than that, you feel a bit removed from it.
“I had to research her and then I realised, wow, this woman is awesome. I fell in love with her.”
She is starring alongside Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles in the series, which looks like it will explore his early relationship with Camilla (played by Emerald Fennell).
The Crown season 3 will be released on Netflix on November 17
