The Crown season 3 cast: Who is in the cast? Why did they change the cast?

Once again, Netflix subscribers will be able to binge-watch another royal instalment as series three of The Crown will be out at the weekend. The show follows the life of the British royal family throughout the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and fans just cannot get enough of all the drama. Here’s everything you need to know about this season’s cast.

Who is in the cast of The Crown of season 3?

Queen Elizabeth II – Olivia Colman

There has been a shake up in terms of casting and it looks like we’ll be in for a right royal treat.

Taking on the daunting role of the Queen will be actress Olivia Coleman, who will be replacing Claire Foy.

From Fleabag and Broadchurch, to The Peep Show and the television adaptation of Les Misérables, Coleman has played a wide range of characters over the years and The Crown is set to be her biggest challenge yet.

But she does have prior experience playing a royal.

Coleman was weeping tears of joy as she won her first ever Oscar for her part as Queen Anne in 2018 film The Favourite.

Speaking of how the roles differ to Press Association, Coleman said: “I find the harder is Queen Elizabeth because everyone knows what she looks like, everyone knows what she sounds like, everyone has an opinion on whether the casting is right.

“And I am loving the job, I am loving trying to play her, but I find her harder.

“The difference between the two, playing different people is what I went into this job for, that’s the whole point of being an actor, so I am having a lovely time.”

Prince Philip – Tobias Menzies

Replacing ex-Doctor Who actor Matt Smith as Prince Philip will be Tobias Menzies.

He is probably known for starring in Outlander, as well as BBC historical epic Rome, Game of Thrones, Black Mirror and Catastrophe.

From taking on the role and getting an insight into royal life, Menzies says he doesn’t think the Duke of Edinburgh and his son Prince Charles had the best of relationships.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he said: “We (Josh O’Connor who plays Prince Charles) spend very little time together, and I think that’s very much what Peter [Morgan, showrunner] feels is the truth of that relationship.

“It’s interesting, I’m constantly sort of trying to warm it up a bit, because I think I might ever so slightly disagree with that idea.

“I think he is a difficult father, but I don’t think he’s a negligent father or a disinterested father. I get the sense that they’re very different people and his fatherly concern for Charles manifests as slight bullying. But I don’t think he’s uninvolved.”

Prince Charles – Josh O’Connor

Another new face to the cast will be actor Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles.

O’Connor was in ITV’s The Durrells, God’s Own Country and Peaky Blinders.

Princess Anne – Erin Doherty

The actress is best known for playing Fabienne in the BBC adaptation Les Misérables earlier this year.

She has also played Jessie Marsh in Call the Midwife in a one-off episode, but this will be the actor’s first major television role.

Camilla Parker Bowles – Emerald Fennell

This upcoming series will also explore more of Camilla and Prince Charles’ relationship.

Fennell, who will be playing Camilla, played Patsy Mount in Call the Midwife for four years, and had parts in TV series Chickens and film The Danish Girl.

Why did they change the cast of The Crown for season 3?

Each series of The Crown reflects a different stage of the Queen and the royal family’s lives.

There are decades between every season so the age of the leading actors have to change accordingly.

Foy played the Queen in the first two seasons but the third will be set many years later so an older actress needed to take on her role as well as Prince Philip’s and the rest of the cast.

The cast will stay the same for the next two seasons but will once again change in series five.

The Crown season three will be moving away from the relationship between Prince Phillip and Queen Elizabeth II.

The season’s main focus is going to be on the turbulent relationship between Princess Margaret (Helena Bonham Carter) and Lord Snowdon (Ben Daniels).

From the trailer as well, it seems like we’ll be getting a better insight into what happened between Prince Charles and Camilla (Emerald Fennell).

The Crown season 3 will be dropped on Netflix on Sunday, November 17.
