The Crown: Can Prince Charles speak Welsh?

The Crown’s Prince Charles (played by Josh O’Connor) is seen in episode six heading to Wales before his investiture as the Prince of Wales. Viewers watched as he learned Welsh under the tutelage of an Aberystwyth University professor – but is this based on truth?

Can Prince Charles really speak Welsh?

The Crown season three was released on Netflix in full on Sunday, November 17 with all-new episodes of the royal drama.

Episode six is called Twysog Cymru and sees a young Prince Charles head to Aberystwyth University for a term away from the University of Cambridge.

Ahead of becoming the Prince of Wales, he was sent to study Welsh at the university alongside fellow students.

This was in part due to the growing Welsh nationalism in the country that meant some resented having a foreign prince.

Meeting with a Welsh republican professor named Edward Millward (Mark Lewis Jones) the pair clashed over the history of the past Prince of Wales’ involvement in the country.

In the episode, this then leads Charles to learn more about the importance of the role as well as more about Welsh history.

This ended with the 21-year-old royal giving a speech at Caernarfon Castle in northwest Wales in a televised ceremony.

However, the episode left some fans wondering whether the real prince was actually sent to Wales.

However, he added that the lessons between the two went quite well leading up to his official speech.

He added: “He had a one-on-one tutorial with me once a week. He was eager, and did a lot of talking.

“By the end, his accent was quite good. Toward the end of his term, he said good morning – ‘Bore da’ – to a woman at college; she turned to him and said: ‘I don’t speak Welsh!’

“His presence caused a bit of a stir. Crowds would gather outside the college as he drove up in his sports car.”

The Prince of Wales has remained closely linked to the country over his years of royal duties, working on many projects in the country.

He is also part of more than 40 charities and organisations in the country and visits every summer.

He owns a residence in the country called Llwynywermod where he stays when he is on visits with his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

Charles is also the longest-serving Prince of Wales after he was first awarded the title in 1958.

The Crown season 3 is now available to stream on Netflix.
