The Cheeky Girls may have famously sang about touching their bums once upon a time, but it seems one person determined to keep his distance is Boris Johnson.

The twins, who shot to fame on Popstars: The Rivals in 2002, claim the Prime Minister was seriously ‘tense’ when he bumped into them at a charity event back in 2011.

The singing duo, who sang ‘don’t be shy, touch my bum’ in their 2002 hit Cheeky Song, said Boris actively kept his hands in his pockets to avoid touching them while they posed for photos.

‘Everybody else who took pictures with us was very relaxed and happy to be there. Only Boris was tense,’ Monica Irimia told The Sun.

‘He kept his hands in his pockets all way through during taking the photos with us, to make sure he didn’t touch us.’

She added: ‘Everybody else put their hands over our shoulders, that kind of friendly pose for photos. Boris was the only person who tried to appear very distant and neutral.’

Awkward.

The pair, who narrowly missed out on making it into Girls Aloud, are still doing their thing 17 years on from first shooting to fame and now perform up and down the UK.

Last summer, Monica and her sister Gabriella revealed they battled anxiety, anorexia and depression while dealing with their overnight stardom.

‘For the first five years of our Cheeky Girls career we enjoyed a lot of success and suddenly we found our life was totally controlled,’ they said on Loose Women last July.

‘We didn’t have any control whatsoever. We were told what to do all the time, we didn’t have free time for ourselves.’

They admitted they’d been in competition with each other to lose the most weight, and blamed the pressure to be sexy for getting their first boob jobs just months after their debut single’s success.
