Trainspotting is one of the most famous films to come out of Scotland.
The production was directed by Danny Boyle and was the silver screen adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s novel, which centred on the heroin scene in his home city of Edinburgh.
The cult classic catapulted on to screens in 1996 and went on to win multiple awards.
In 2017, the sequel T2 Trainspotting also hit cinemas and unsurprisingly, was a real hit.
But where are the cast now?
Ewan McGregor – “Renton”
Ewan McGregor is a Scottish born actor who is best known for his role as heroin addict Mark Renton in Trainspotting.
McGregor rose to worldwide fame in the late 90s when he starred in the Star Wars prequel trilogy as Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi.
As well as being an actor he is no stranger to singing as he starred alongside Nicole Kidman in the hit musical Moulin Rouge. He has also received critical acclaim for his starring roles in the theatre production of Guys and Dolls and Othello. The actor is a dad to four and is currently living in LA.
Robert Carlyle – Begbie
Robert Carlyle was best known for his role as the foul-mouthed and violent Begbie.
The 59-year-old first played the glass-throwing hardman in 1996 and revisited the part in 2017 for T2 Trainspotting.

Father-of-three Robert now lives in Vancouver, Canada, because of his work on TV shows Stargate Universe and Once Upon a Time but returned to the UK to play Ogilvy BBC’s The War of the Worlds – a three-part adaptation of HG Wells’s tale of Martian invasion, also starring Eleanor Tomlinson.
During the coronavirus pandemic, Carlyle showed his support to VISE UP – a visor production line and next-day delivery service supplying protective masks directly to NHS workers across Scotland.
Johnny Lee Miller – Sick Boy
After playing Sick Boy in Trainspotting, Miller starred as the title character in comedy-drama Eli Stone for which he received a Satellite Award nomination for best actor.
He then went on to star in BBC drama Emma and also in the fifth season of Dexter.
After his divorce from Angelina Jolie in 1996, Miller went on to marry actress and model Michele Hicks in Malibu and the couple currently live in New York with their son Buster.
Ewen Bremner – Spud
Ewen Bremner played Spud in the film.
Since then he went on to star in hit films such as Snatch, Black Hawd Dawn and Pearl Harbour, and in 2017 he produced the short film No Song to Sing.
He also returned to play Spud once again in T2.
Bremner now lives in New York but often comes back to Scotland to spend time with his family in Edinburgh.
Kelly MacDonald – Diane
Kelly MacDonald made her debut in Trainspotting and has since went on to have a very successful career.
While working as a barmaid, she spotted a leaflet advertising the part and decided to go for it and landed the role as Diane.
MacDonald then went to star in films such as Finding Never Land, Harry Potter and even voiced main character Merida in Disney Pixar’s Brave.
The actress married Dougie Payne who is the bassist in Travis. They lived in London and New York but returned to live in Glasgow with their two children but sadly the couple seperated in 2017.
Kevin McKidd – Tommy
After his stint as Tommy in Trainspotting, Kevin McKidd went on to star in hit show Grey’s Anatomy as Owen Hunt.
Alongside his Trainspotting co-star Kelly MacDonald, McKidd voiced Lord MacGuffin in Brave.
Earlier this year, the actor rejoined Speyisde Sessions Band to raise money for charities in need during the coronavirus pandemic.
In 2015, McKidd became a U.S. citizen and lives in New York with his wife Arielle Goldrath, they couple welcomed a daughter last year.
He has two other children from his previous marriage.
