The biggest new video games releasing the week of 5/9/22 • AIPT – AIPT

2022 has been off to a blazing start for gamers, from major releases like Pokémon Legends: Arceus to Horizon Forbidden West to Elden Ring. May promises plenty of exciting new indie releases, so let’s check out what video games are hitting storefronts this week.

Source of Madness (5/11)

Carry Castle’s Source of Madness draws upon the themes and stories of H.P. Lovecraft’s work to create a dark and twisted game. It’s a side-scrolling action roguelite “powered by procedural generation and AI machine learning.” You’ll use close-combat magic to fight off enemies and become stronger by developing a robust skill tree. Your task? Find the source of madness in this world. Sounds simple, but, if you’re at all familiar with Lovecraft’s work, you know it won’t be.

Evil Dead: The Game (5/13)

Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead has been adapted into video games before, but this week’s Evil Dead: The Game marks the series’ biggest gaming release, and its first on console since 2005. It’ll primarily be an asymmetrical multiplayer game, with a team of players going against a player-controlled kandarian demon. The game won’t be all multiplayer, however, as a single-player mode will allow fans to relive their favorite classic scenes from the films.

Salt and Sacrifice (5/10)

If you ever wondered what Dark Souls and the like would look like as GBA games, may I introduce you to Salt and Sacrifice. It’s a sequel to 2016’s Salt and Sanctuary releasing this week. It displays its From Software influence proudly, from the player invasions to the visceral attacks to even the way “Mage Devoured” pops up after a boss is defeated. You’ll be “pursuing, hunting, and obliterating” mages, embodiments of elemental chaos, while also exploring the labyrinthine world.

Also worth checking out: We Were Here Forever, Wolfstride (releasing on Switch), Harvest Days, and Eiyuden Chronicle Rising.
