The Big Bang Theory season 12 spoilers: Creator REVEALS inspiration behind finale

Fans of the Big Bang Theory are already bracing themselves for the final time they will see the stars of the CBS show and worried about what will happen to them.

According to co-creator Chuck Lorre, fans can expect the series finale to more tear-jerking than explosive.

He spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about how the show will end and how to “land the plane safely.”

Chuck said: “It meant a lot — to be there from our very clumsy beginnings, to when we actually figured out how to do it and sustain it, to ending with what I think is a wonderful [episode].

“I didn’t have a clue how to [end the series]. Steve Holland – who’s been the showrunner for the last two years – suggested that rather than bringing the show to a hard stop – where everybody packs their bags and goes in different directions and the show is exploded in some final way – that we have an emotional finale.

“I thought that was brilliant.”

So instead of a big bang, fans are going to get lots and lots of tears.

He also goes on to explain why he decided to bring the show to an end after Sheldon Cooper star Jim Parsons said he did not want to carry on.

He added: “He wanted to move on. And I long ago decided that I didn’t want to do a series if any of the principal players were not in it. I didn’t want to explain away the absence of a major character. I didn’t want to do Archie’s Place. You don’t just pull it apart and put it back together again and expect the same results.

“My hesitations might’ve been about my ability to keep going. But I never felt it was my place to get in the way of this show. Considering the extraordinary success and the economic nature, I didn’t want to step in front of it. It gets bigger than you and you’ve just got to get out of the way.”

“So if Chuck came and said let’s do it, I’d say yes. Other than that, I don’t see a spin-off for myself. But I don’t like to say no to Chuck. So if he wanted it, I’m in.”

However, the characters will live on in Young Sheldon.

Jim Parsons will continue to play Sheldon in the show’s spin-off, which focuses on his life and he recently spoke about Sheldon’s children in the spin-off.

He revealed to TVLine: “I will still speak from [Sheldon]’s vantage point. In fact, I’ve already done voiceovers [on Young Sheldon] from ages that are older than I ever got with Sheldon [on The Big Bang Theory].

“He spoke of his children last season, and obviously we haven’t seen that yet. I will get to hear where [the writers’] imaginations take that character… that I never would’ve gotten to find out otherwise.”

The Big Bang Theory season finale airs Thursday on CBS and in the UK on E4.
