The Big Bang Theory finale aired on CBS in the US last night delivering the ‘perfect ending’ for fans, but a surprise appearance from Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar was just the icing on the cake.
Fans of TBBT will be well aware of the many Buffy references made throughout the series so a cameo from the iconic 90s idol herself was pretty perfect.
The 42-year-old actress starred in last night’s last ever episode of the show, she made a cameo as herself when she accompanied Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar) to see Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) accept a Nobel Prize in Sweden after meeting him on a plane and agreeing to be his guest.
‘This is not a date,’ Sarah urged in the hilarious moment.
Executive producers Steve Molaro and Steve Holland revealed how they were delighted to get the star on board for the cameo.
‘Steve and I are both big Buffy fans – as are a lot of people in the [writers’] room,’ Holland told Entertainment Tonight.
‘And rather than going for whoever is the hot right now celeb, it seemed like a really cool, nerd-pull for these characters who have been fans of Buffy forever too.
‘And it was our way to get to meet her before the end.’
The cast were tasked with keeping the appearance under wraps ahead of the finale airing.
Molaro explained: ‘But we had to keep telling everybody on set and on the cast, “Please be careful on social media and please be careful not to post pictures”.’
Fans were made up with the reference with many taking to Twitter to share their excitement.
One fan tweeted: ‘You ended my favourite comedy with a reference to my favourite drama!!’
While another added: ‘This. Was. Life.’
The final two episodes of The Big Bang Theory will be shown on E4 in an hour-long special on Thursday 23 May at 8pm.
