It’s hard to believe that Travellers Tales has been producing Lego video games for almost 15 years. The company got its start with the franchise through Lego Star Wars: The Video Game, which came out in 2005. And now it’s come full circle almost, with Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga set to release across multiple platforms next year.
So which of the company’s games register as the best in the Lego lexicon? There are a lot of great ones to consider. But here’s our top five, which come highly recommended when it comes to building something. And what’s more, they’re awesome for players of all ages.
Lego Jurassic World
Though it doesn’t really do anything with the previous Fallen Kingdom film, Lego Jurassic World still has hours of dino-riffic fun for fans of the films. The first three Jurassic Films are revisited, along with the first World, all featuring the original characters and dialogue. Travellers Tales lovingly recreates the films in family-friendly form, with entertaining gameplay and lots to unlock. And now, the game is available on Nintendo Switch for a great low price. Like Jurassic Park itself, Lego Jurassic World provides a sense of wonder that you shouldn’t miss.
Lego City Undercover
Initially released for the Wii U back in 2013, Lego City Undercover is one of the few original Lego titles in WB’s library. And it’s also one of the most noteworthy, following a cop named Chase McCain as he tries to shut down criminals in Lego City. Filled with epic moments (the final stage is breathtakingly cool), hilarious wink-in-the-eye references and exciting open world gameplay, this Undercover adventure is a treat. And it’s also available for numerous platforms, including the Nintendo Switch.
Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens
While Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga is an outstanding game in its own right, Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens revolutionizes the formula with a neat new element. Along with following events from the film, it also debuts a new “multi-build” system. With this, players can create different items in a stage, depending on what’s needed. This, combined with the superb combat and rich presentation, make this a Force-ful adventure for all Star Wars fans. And you can get it for fairly cheap nowadays, as it sells for under $20.
Lego DC Super-Villains
The Lego Batman trilogy is recommended for those looking for comic book antics. But there’s something about Lego DC Super-Villains that pushes the formula to the next level. Maybe it’s the way you take control of some of the comic brand’s biggest baddies, including the Joker (voiced by Mark Hamill, no less). Or maybe it’s the hilarious storyline and inventive gameplay segments that keep you involved. Whatever the case, you need this game, because it feels good to be bad.
Lego Dimensions
It may be dead in the water now, because the “toys to life” market has all but faded away. But Lego Dimensions is one of those examples in the genre that truly made a difference. It told a creative, exciting story involving all kinds of crossovers, and it also challenged players to work with their builds to get the most out of their game. Throw in a variety of extra adventures, ranging from Back To The Future to The Goonies to Scooby-Doo!, as well as a highly-detailed presentation, and you have a franchise that’s well worth hunting down. Perhaps this is a good time for WB to consider an all-in-one release on Switch, to give players an idea of what they missed. Hmmmm.
