The best dressed celebrities of 2019

The last twelve months have seen celebrity style moments both high and low. And now, as we near the end of the year – and decade – it’s time to celebrate those who have racked up some serious sartorial points.

First to the royal family. Right up until the birth of baby Archie in May, the Duchess of Sussex triumphantly managed to dodge the threat of frumpy maternity wear like a truly stylish royal. Sister-in-law the Duchess of Cambridge also continued her fashionable reign in an army of impeccable looks – not least, the soon-to-be-iconic Catherine Walker faux fur coat she wore on Christmas Day at Sandringham

During awards season, we thanked the fashion gods for Billy Porter, as the actor graced red carpet after red carpet in a combination of off-the-shoulder, floor-length and frothy tulle gowns. Most notable was the custom Christian Siriano tuxedo gown he wore to the Oscars in February

Speaking to Vogue, the Pose actor said: “I’ve always wanted to wear a ball gown, I just didn’t know when. I was inspired [this past New York Fashion Week] because there’s a conversation happening about inclusion and diversity. There were so many people of different races and voices. Fashion has the ability to touch people in a different way.”

Later in the year there was the much-Instagrammed renaissance of Jennifer Lopez, who cemented her icon status by closing the Versace spring/summer 2020 show in September wearing an iteration of the famous tropical print dress she wore back in 1999. You know, the one that was almost entirely responsible for the birth of Google Images.

Having her very own hot girl summer in New York was Katie Holmes, who inspired many a knock-off version of that viral cashmere bra and cardigan combo, or bradigan, if you will. The 41-year-old actress spent the remainder of the year turning the heads of fashion lovers with her effortlessly cool style.

Now to actress Elle Fanning, who deserves a special mention for her fashion marathon during Cannes Film Festival, which saw her parading 15 incredible looks as part of her role as jury member.

And lest we forget two dapper gents who are equally as deserving of the Best Dressed Man 2019 title: Harry Styles and Timothée Chalamet. The pair know a thing or two about eye-catching ensembles, and 2019 has been their year for proving men can have just as much fun with fashion as the ladies.

Little Women star Chalamet is one of few human beings on the planet who can make a glittery Louis Vuitton bib look good, which is precisely what he did at the 76th Golden Globes in January. For the rest of the year, he opted for some seriously envy-inducing suits, including an army of head-to-toe Alexander McQueen looks and his foolproof Haider Ackermann.

Former One Directioner Styles continued to win hearts one fit-and-flare suit at a time. Most recently during his performance at Capital FM’s Jingle Bell Ball, where he proved he could pull off a slinky v-necked jumpsuit, thanks to the addition of glitter.
