The best boozy staycations you can book in the UK – with wine tours and gin tastings


WHEN lockdown is over, and friends and families can once again meet up, many may be looking for ways to spend time together.

There are some great staycation options around the UK which include wine tastings, beer brewery tours or gin making classes – here are some of the best weekend breaks you can book with a hotel stay along the way.

Located on Aldeburgh beach, Fishers Gin opened their first distillery last month.

Using foraged herbs and botanicals from the nearby sea, you can book tours and tasting experiences from £30.

You can stay next door is The Brudenell Hotel, which often offer deals including complimentary Fishers Gin.

The Haymans Distillery is often rated one of the best things to do, located within Balham.

For £25, you can have an interactive lesson learning about the botanicals, as well as try it for yourself (something you can do in the courtyard, weather permitting).

Or, Drinks at The Distillery, which you can book for the weekend, is a two-hour session with three gin drinks and a history lesson for just £25.

Located a short walk away, you can stay at the Grade II listed public house The Bedford.

Opened just last month, Tarquin’s gin school in Padstow offers gin-distilling classes for groups.

Visitors can even bring their own plants and shrubs to make a unique gin, and the lesson, which costs £85, also ends with your own 70cl bottle.

The popular seaside resort has a range of hotels nearby to choose from, including the award-winning The Pig or Rick Stein’s St Edmunds House just round the corner, who have a limited edition gin collaboration with Tarquin.

Perhaps one of the best known gins, the Bombay Sapphire distillery is in its unique glass dome.

Clases start from £45, where you make two cocktails, or a tour and complimentary drink for £17.50.

You can also stay at Oakley Hill Park with distillery tours included.

Packages include a one-night stay, distillery tour, a three-course dinner in their Glasshouse restaurant and full English breakfast for £239 per room.

Denbies Vineyard, Surrey

Wine enthusiasts can explore the Surrey-based Denbies Vineyard by train, with an outdoor 50-minute tour with sparkling wine for just £13.95.

For a treat, an outdoor afternoon tea or a hamper trail are also available for families to explore the local area.

There are indoor tours too, for when the weather turns nasty, with tastings for £14.95.

If the booze gets too much you can stay at the Denbies Vineyard hotel, with 17 rooms, some of which overlook the 265-acre estate.

Adnams brewery and distillery, Sothold

If you can’t choose between gin or beer, then Adnams in Southold is your best bet as they create both – the beer has been distilled there as far back as 1345.

Both beer brewery and gin distillery tours are offered, each for 1hr30 and costing £20.

Just around the corner is the 17th century The Swan Hotel, which also has packages for stays and tours to the brewery.

Each room, decorated in funky neon colours, even includes a complimentary 20cl bottle of Adnams gin.

Three Choirs Vineyard, Gloucestershire

Located in the Cotswolds is Three Choirs Vineyard, a 75-acre vineyard and hotel.

Wine-tasting tours start from just £12.50, while a private tour and lunch for two costs £89.95.

The three lodges nestled inside the grape vines include a private veranda to enjoy the wine from, while the B&B on-site also has vineyard-view rooms.

Packages start from £210 for two, which include a one-night stay, vineyard tour and breakfast.

Brewdog, Scotland

Producing 300m pints at any time, the Brewdog headquarters in Scotland is a must for beer fans.

Tours include a 1hr30 tour for £15, including four tastings and a five-hour VIP tour with dining included for £100.

Brewdog has also opened three hotels above their bars which each offer the drinks within the rooms.

While two are in the US, the Brewdog Kennels in Aberdeen is a 30 minute drive from the brewery, with a beer fridge in the shower and free half-pint on arrival.

Other alternatives include the Darnley’s small-batch distillery near St Andrews in Fife.

When the borders open once again, wine-lovers can stay in a wine barrel surrounded by a working vineyard in Portugal.

The strongest gin has just been released – at 95% ABV.
