The best and worst of the Logies

The 61st Logie Awards took place on the Gold Coast on Sunday, and this year’s ceremony was one of the most controversial yet.

From Karl Stefanovic being brutally roasted to Married At First Sight being snubbed, the event was full of surprises.

Comedian Tom Gleeson, who took home the Gold Logie, opened the ceremony by criticising Channel Nine for firing Karl from the Today show.

‘I think the reason they (the Logies) ask you to do the opening is because Channel Nine has run out of stars,’ he said.

‘They don’t have any left. They have a new rule on breakfast TV, too – if you are too entertaining, they fire you! Am I right Karl. Is Karl here. Where is Karl?’

Just moments later the comedian took another swipe at Karl, this time by roasting his ‘tacky wedding’ to Jasmine Yarbrough.

‘Congratulations to Married At First Sight by the way for their monster ratings. Give them a huge round of applause,’ Tom said.

‘Channel Nine were happy to cash in on your ratings by showing off your tacky weddings and then fired Karl Stefanovic for having one!’

Karl was later the subject of another barb when Kerry O’Brien mentioned the 44-year-old’s highly publicised divorce from Cassandra Thorburn, 48, in 2017.

During his Logies Hall of Fame induction speech, Kerry joked that Karl’s divorce to Cassandra must have cost the host ‘a couple of million’.

Meanwhile, Married At First Sight was surprisingly snubbed all night despite being the highest-rated show on Australian television.

MAFS lost Most Popular Reality Program to Ten’s MasterChef Australia and Most Outstanding Reality Program to Ten’s Australian Survivor.

On top of that, the stars of the series were snubbed by the media on the red carpet and forced to watch the ceremony on TV in a dining room out the back of The Star Casino.

The shock of the night however came when Tom Gleeson took home the Gold Logie and ruffled some feathers with a long-winded acceptance speech about his trolling campaign to win the trophy.

During his rambling speech, the funnyman seemed to anger some of his fellow nominees, including Amanda Keller, who shot him an absolute death stare.

‘Just because all of you want it and I’ve got it, don’t get angry with me. It’s alright, you’ll all survive,’ he said as a furious Amanda glared from the audience.

The comedian admitted he’d been ‘drinking heavily’ as he launched into a rambling and awkward rant, saying: ‘There has been a lot of concern that I’m turning this award into a joke. But what you are forgetting is I’m a comedian. I love jokes.

‘This award for me represents a joke, but I love jokes. I really enjoy them. I really think we should all lighten the f**k up. I really do.’

The comic added: ‘The aim of my campaign was just to have fun with the whole thing. Because it all doesn’t really matter. ‘

After further rambling, the Hard Chat host then concluded: ‘I would like to take this as a win for comedy. And taking the p**s and not giving a s**t. I’m taking it as a win for comedy because comedy to me is really important.’
