The Batman star Zoe Kravitz reveals excitement at playing Catwoman and the "strong femininity" of the character

Star of upcoming Caped Crusader movie The Batman Zoe Kravitz has discussed her excitement at playing the role of Catwoman/Selina Kyle and the “strong femininity” the character represents.

The role is one full of prestige and has previously been played on the big screen by stars such as Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry and Anne Hathaway and in TV by Eartha Kitt and Camren Bicondova.

At the Television Critics Association, Kravitz told press how she may take inspiration from one of her predecessors. She said: “I think Catwoman is an iconic character.

“I was never into a lot of comic books, but that world was always really intriguing to me.

“And then of course Michelle Pfeiffer — her performance has always been super inspiring to me. It just felt iconic.”

The 31-year-old actress was offered the role back in October, and it will see her star alongside Robert Pattinson. It is a project she obviously can’t wait to sink her teeth into.

She went on: “I think Catwoman/Selina Kyle represents really strong femininity and I’m excited to dive into that.

“Femininity means power and I think it’s a different kind of power than masculine power,” said Kravitz. “That’s something I think is really interesting about Batman and Catwoman.

“I think Batman represents a very masculine power and Catwoman represents a very feminine power, slightly more complicated. And softer too.

“I like the idea that you can be soft, you can be gentle, and still be very powerful and so very dangerous.”

Oddly enough, in one way she is simply reprising the role, having voiced the character of Catwoman in The Batman Lego Movie, though you would expect the step up to the live action film may be slightly darker.

The Batman is being directed by Dawn of The Planet of the Apes’ Matt Reeves, and as well as Kravitz and Pattinson, will also star Jeffrey Wright, Paul Dano, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, and John Turturro.

It is scheduled to be released in June, 2021.
