California startup rolls out $70,000 smoothie-making ROBOT that can blend drinks in 2 minutes or less

  • Blendid’s robot smoothie maker is now at the University of San Francisco
  • The machine can be used via mobile app or a nearby tablet
  • Robots have taken the food industry by storm in delivery and beyond

It’s official: you can now add smoothie-making to the increasingly long list of tasks commandeered by robots.

A one-armed autonomous robot designed by California-based startup Blendid was recently rolled out at the University of San Francisco and is capable of making a dozen different blended drinks in about two minutes, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Customers of Blendid’s smoothie robot are able to order on their mobile device via the company’s app, or at one of several tablet kiosks nearby.

WHAT IS BLENDID?

Blendid is an automated smoothie-making robot that can whip up an array of drinks in 2 minutes or less.

After being unveiled last year, the system was recently introduced to University of San Francisco’s campus.

On other college campuses, food delivery robots have also taken customers by storm.

Star Technologies and FedEx are among the companies making their foray into the world of automated delivery.

Customization is built into its system, according to Blendid.

Using the ordering app or tablet, patrons of the robot kiosk are able to choose which elements they may want more or less of.

For the customer, the price of cutting-edge automation comes at a relatively low cost, with Blendid charging about $6 for each drink.

On Blendid’s end, however, expenses are a little. One machine costs $70,000 to build according to the report.

While the technology may be cutting edge by most consumers’ standards, in San Francisco, the convenience of autonomously crafted and served food is a certified trend.

Cafe X, an automated coffee machine capable of making multiple drink sizes and styles of coffee, has already unveiled two different machines in the city.

Likewise, similar robots have cropped up that are capable of making chopped salads and pizza.

In the world of food delivery, robots have been of particular intrigue.

Drinks at the machine can be ordered via mobile app or by a kiosk nearby. Customization, the company says, is built in.

This year, a fleet of 25 four-wheeled delivery robots were let loose on George Mason University campus in Virginia where they were deployed to deliver food to the school’s 40,000 students.

Bots, developed by Starship Technolgies, expanded this week offering the same service to students at the Northern Arizona University.

Patrons of the robot delivery service are charge a $1.99 delivery fee and typically receive their food in about 15-minutes. (No more than 20 lbs. per delivery, says the company)

Additionally, last month FedEx unveiled an early model of its delivery robots which it plans to use to deliver customers’ pizza and other goods.

According to a report from the Washington Post, FedEx will partner with the likes of Pizza Hut, Walgreen’s, Walmart and more.
