Tesco website and app down ‘due to hack’ causing chaos for shoppers online

TESCO shoppers have been running into difficulty on the supermarket’s website and app throughout the morning.

The site has been down since yesterday meaning hundreds of customers can’t complete their online grocery shop.

When shoppers go onto Tesco’s website and attempt to “shop groceries” an error message pops up that reads: “Sorry, there’s currently an issue on our website.”

As well as not being able to browse groceries the issue has meant customers can’t make changes to pre-arranged orders too.

It’s not good news for the keen majority who have been using the weekends ahead of Christmas to stock up before the big day, relying on their advanced shops to beat feared food shortages.

We don’t know exactly when customers will be able to access the site again, but it is currently frustrating hundreds who wish to complete their weekly shop online.

Tesco has said the outage followed an attempt to “interfere” with its systems.

Though it was also revealed that no customer data had been compromised.

It’s concerned customer’s nonetheless, as only weeks ago Facebook and Instagram experienced a major outage that blocked users’ access for hours too.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “Since yesterday, we’ve been experiencing disruption to our online grocery website and app.

“An attempt was made to interfere with our systems which has caused problems with the search function on the site.

“There is no reason to believe that this issue impacts customer data and we continue to take ongoing action to make sure all data stays safe.”

Tesco has also apologised to users on Twitter, tweeting yesterday as issues arose: “We are working hard to get things back up and running.”

But users have been left in the dark since Saturday afternoon, with services down for nearly 24 hours now.

Many took to Twitter to air their frustrations.

One said: “Website been down a day now. Must be loosing millions. Looks like @sainsburys might be getting my money this week.”

While another said: “Tesco app and website is now down for the 2nd day. What’s going on?”

You can still shop on other elements of the supermarket’s site, as F&F clothing is still accessible online currently, and the same goes for Tesco Mobile and Tesco bank.

But those wishing to browse food toiletries and other household goods can’t for the time being.

It’s also led to a number of customers receiving odd and unwanted shopping as a result of not being able to amend their orders.

One shopper explained on Twitter: “I have just had 4 boxes of Pepsi max delivered and no other food as your website has been down for 24 hours and I wasn’t able to edit my basket!”
