Tenet, the new spy blockbuster from Christopher Nolan, could have its release date pushed back even further due to coronavirus, according to a veteran analyst.

The thriller, which stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debecki, has already been delayed twice

Its current release date stands at 12 August 2020.

However, as quoted by Variety, industry expert Eric Handler has written in an industry forecast report that an August release is a ‘low likelihood’.

This is because of a surge in coronavirus cases in major markets like California, Texas and Florida in recent weeks.

According to the publication, Handler said he would be surprised if the movie was out by ‘September, at the earliest.’

In his forecast, Handler, of MKM Partners, added: ‘The near-term outlook for exhibition related stocks remains extremely clouded given the uncertainty about when theatres will be able to re-open with new Hollywood content.’

Nolan’s directing credits include Inception, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

Speaking about box office trends generally, Handler continued: ‘For the back half of the year we project third-quarter and fourth-quarter box office revenue could fall 90 percent and 50 percent, respectively, down from our previous forecast calling for a decline of 65 percent and 29 percent.’

Summer isn’t completely devoid of blockbusters, however.

Jurassic Park and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, for example, are being screened for audiences once again as drive-in cinemas welcome film fans around the world.
