The Home Office figures will spark fears that dangerous jihadis are being let loose too soon – while they still pose a national security risk.

There was outrage last year when notorious hate preacher Anjem Choudary was set free halfway through his five and a half year sentence for drumming up support for ISIS.

Overall, yesterday’s report showed 268 people were arrested under anti-terror laws in the year to March.

It was a drop of 40 per cent on the previous year when there was a record surge in the wake of the deadly attacks on London and Manchester.

Of those held last year, 70 were charged with terrorism offences, 32 of whom have been convicted so far.

Another 93 released on bail or under investigation while 15 faced “alternative action”.

Detailed analysis shows this figure included 10 who were recalled to prison, double the 5 recorded in the previous year.

There are now 223 convicted terrorists behind bars in Great Britain, down 2 per cent in the past year – the first fall since 2013.

The vast majority (80 per cent) were Islamists and another 15 per cent were deemed extreme right-wing.
