He was initially taken out of the game in agony but after a brief rest he was allowed back onto the field.

But when he got home the pain had worsened and his mum took him to A&E in Burlington, Massachusetts.

Doctors examined the boy and found his right scrotum had swollen up and both testicles were tender and firm.

The medics at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center detailed the case in a journal published in Urology Case Reports.

Ball ache

They said an ultrasound showed that blood flow was normal, however fluid was collecting around both testes.

At the time, doctors offered the patient and his mum a number of options including an operation to drain the fluid.

But he said he wanted to avoid surgery and he was admitted for overnight observation and a repeat ultrasound in the morning.

Writing in the report, the medics said that “not surprisingly” the scan showed blood had continued to pool around his testicles.

As such, he was taken into the operating theatre for a procedure known as “scrotal exploration”.

Tricky procedure

Surgeons discovered that both testicles had suffered large anterior fractures, which had forced some tissue out of place.

They were able to remove the damaged tissue and close up the right testes but the left side had proved more difficult.

Eventually they turned to a technique known as tunica vaginalis flap and the testes were replaced back in the scrotum in the right position.

A drain was then placed within the scrotum, which was closed in multiple layers.

It’s unclear how well the patient recovered after the op.

Yesterday, we reported on a man who had to have his scrotum removed after it swelled so big it hung below his knees.

The 43-year-old, from Panama, had a massive inguinal hernia and fluid collecting in his scrotum.

Doctors were also worried about the fact the flesh was starting to rot and he was rushed for emergency surgery to remove it.
