Teacher 'shouldn't be around children' for comment about pupil's Mother's Day card

A teacher has been told she ‘shouldn’t be around children’ after her comments to a five-year-old girl about a Mother’s Day card she was making.

The girl’s dad explains that his daughter Sarah (name changed) started primary school in August, and has been excitedly talking about feeling like a ‘big girl’, settling in well and making friends.

Sarah’s mother signed away her parental rights when she was born and her dad has explained everything to her ‘as best I could’ now that she’s old enough.

With her mum not in the picture, his daughter has never celebrated Mother’s Day – which is approaching on March 22.

For the past week in school the students have been busy making cards for their mums and the dad says Sarah came home with the draft version of her card which ‘melted my heart’, seeing she had written ‘Happy Mother’s Day to my daddy’.

The five-year-old made a Mother’s Day card for her dad instead

The next day, he went to pick Sarah up from school to find she was still working trying to get the final version of her card just right so she could give it to her dad in a few weeks time.

“I thought it was cute and then her teacher decided to step in,” he said.

“She decided to tell me that she’d told Sarah she couldn’t keep making a card for me as I wasn’t her mum. She said that if Sarah kept doing the card wrong, she’d be in trouble and that I should teach my daughter better than to write something wrong for a day dedicated to mothers.

The comments upset his daughter too

“I got angry and told the teacher that it wasn’t any of her business but I am both mum and dad to Sarah and that if she wants to make me a Mother’s Day card she can.

“I then told the teacher to mind her own business and I went in and got Sarah. I noticed how upset she was about her teacher’s comments and I even escalated it to complaining to the headmaster.”

He said he doesn’t think it was right for the teacher to crush his daughter’s spirit, and has a meeting with the headteacher coming up.

The dad also added that the school are aware that he is a single parent.

Advice for parents

The story left others on Reddit fuming, with one writing: “That’s heartbreaking. The headmaster should be aware that one of the teachers shouldn’t be around little kids.

A second said: “You deserve the card your daughter made. You’re both to her.”

Another replied: “That teacher was unnecessarily rude and your daughter was doing nothing wrong. I grew up with a single mother and it was occasions like that that was really rough during school. You did the right thing reporting her.”
