TAYLOR Swift has dropped new single ME! off her upcoming seventh studio album and shared a stunning pastel themed music video – with a Mary Poppins twist.
All Tay Tay fans know every song has hidden meanings (Easter eggs) – and we reveal what this tune is all about.
What is the meaning behind Taylor Swift’s ME! and who is it about?
As with all Taylor Swift songs she likes to draw reference to people she has fallen out with, loves she has lost, her current boyfriend and even her cats.
ME! is no different and is packed with lots of juicy stories and Easter eggs for the big Swifty fans.
The song dropped TODAY (April 26, 2019).
We unpick it for you, and let you know what she is talking about in her new tune.
Brighter attitude to life
The whole video – which features Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie – is a pastel, rainbow coloured fiesta showing Taylor has moved into a bright new chapter of her life – and she is loving it.
This is in stark-contrast to her Reputation album, which was about snakes, back-stabbing, affairs and enemies.
You couldn’t get a more colourful and cheerful song and video – Taylor is happy again.
As with the title, ME!, the song is about learning to love yourself and being happy and confident with who you are.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West feud
The video pays homage to her feud with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West in the opening few seconds as a pink snake slithers along a cobbled street, before bursting into butterflies.
This is symbolising the fall-out and that she is now moving on.
Her sixth album Reputation featured the feud heavily with snakes appearing in her music videos and also on her tour.
References to Look What You Made Me Do video
In the Look What You Made Me Do video, Taylor was seated on a throne on top of a dark staircase.
She has now descended the throne and everything is much brighter.
In the song she also Taylor said “Sorry the old Taylor can’t come to the phone / Why? / Cuz she’s dead.”
Well not any more as she is seen on the phone in the video.
Meredith and Olivia
Taylor‘s cats make an appearance.
They can be seen hanging out on the couch and their picture is also up on the wall.
Before she bursts into song in the video, Taylor and Brendon argue in French in front of their “young daughters” – the two cats.
Her boyfriend Joe Alwyn
The video features a Mary Poppins-themed scene.
This could be a reference to her London-born boyfriend Joe Alwyn.
The scene sees Brendon float while using an umbrella, just as the magical character does in 1964 film Mary Poppins.
Taylor and Joe started dating in 2017 and she has been no stranger to letting the world know how happy he makes her.
Seven suitcases
The seven suitcases in the video represent her past six albums and the one that she will be dropping soon.
Taylor also wore seven outfits in the video to symbolises her work.
What are the lyrics to ME!?
I promise that you’ll never find another like me
I know that I’m a handful baby, uh
I know I never think before I jump
And you’re the kind of guy the ladies want
(And there’s a lot of cool chicks out there)
I know that I went psycho on the phone
I never leave well enough alone
And trouble’s gonna follow where I go
(And there’s a lot of cool chicks out there)
But one of these things is not like the others
Like a rainbow with all of the colors
Baby doll when it comes to a lover
I promise that you’ll never find another like
Me, ooh
I’m the only one of me
Baby that’s the fun of me
Me, ooh
You’re the only one of you
Baby that’s the fun of you
And I promise that nobody’s gonna love you like me
I know I tend to make it about me
I know you never get just what you see
But I will never bore you baby
(And there’s a lot of lame guys out there)
And when we had that fight out in the rain
You ran after me and called my name
I never want to see you walk away
(And there’s a lot of lame guys out there)
‘Cause one of these things is not like the others
Living in winter, I am your summer
Baby doll when it comes to a lover
I promise that you’ll never find another like
Me, ooh
I’m the only one of me
Let me keep you company
Me, ooh
You’re the only one of you
Baby that’s the fun of you
And I promise that nobody’s gonna love you like me
Hey kids
Spelling is fun
Girl there ain’t no “I” in team
But you know there is a “Me”
Strike the band up 1, 2, 3
I promise that you’ll never find another like me
Girl there ain’t no “I” in team
But you know there is a “Me”
And you can’t spell awesome without me
I promise that you’ll never find another like
Me, ooh
I’m the only one of me
(I’m the only one of me)
Baby that’s the fun of me
(Baby that’s the fun of me)
Me, ooh
You’re the only one of you
Baby that’s the fun of you
And I promise that nobody’s gonna love you like
Me, ooh
Girl there ain’t no “I” in team
But you know there is a “Me”
I’m the only one of me
Baby that’s the fun of me
Me, ooh
Strike the band up 1, 2, 3
You can’t spell awesome without me
You’re the only one of you
Baby that’s the fun of you
And I promise that nobody’s gonna love you like me
What has Taylor said about ME!?
During a surprise appearance at 2019 NFL Draft in Nashville on Thursday night, she told ABC’s Robin Roberts: “ME! is about embracing your individuality and really celebrating it and owning it, and you know, I think that with a pop song we have an ability to get a melody stuck in your head.
“I just wanted it to be one that makes them feel better about themselves.
“The fans are amazing. I can’t believe how much they care.
She went on: “So it makes it more fun for me to create music, to create music videos, knowing that they’ll care about little Easter eggs, or clues, or hints.
“You don’t know how much fun that is to make stuff for people who care about it that much.
“So it’s the fans, they’ve always been there and it’s gotten more fun as time has passed.”
