Taylor Swift's 2019 Billboard Music Awards Performance Is Being Compared To Beyoncé's 2018 Coachella

There were plenty of memorable performances at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards, but everything was kicked off with Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie bringing their hit new song “ME!” to the stage. And while plenty of fans were entertained by their number, other people on the internet noticed some similarities to an iconic past performance from one musical legend known as Beyoncé.

Taylor and Brendon were the first ones to perform at the BBMAs. There were plenty of pastels, parasols, and dancers. But other details such as Taylor’s glittery leotard and the marching band welcoming her to the stage had people comparing the set to Beyoncé’s historic Coachella 2018 performance, which has been cemented in the pop culture lexicon as Beychella.

One tweet that picked up steam read, “TAYLOR SWIFT JUST BIT TF OUTTA BEYONCE ON THE BILLBOARD AWARDS … I’m ???????? where is the beyhive????” Another fan wrote, “Taylor, imma let you finish, but Beyoncé had the best drum line of all time. #BBMAs.”

Meanwhile, others were quick to defend Taylor. One person tweeted, “Beyoncé wasn’t the first to use drums in a performance and Taylor definitely isn’t either. Beyoncé had a whole as band and Taylor had just drums. Y’all need to stop comparing the most general things just because you don’t like Taylor.” Comedian Desus Nice, meanwhile, joked, “Twitter’s wild because there are ppl on here saying Beyoncé didn’t invent marching bands and we all saw when she did.”

Obviously, marching bands and drums have been around for a long time and neither artist was the first to use them. But it’s understandable why this discussion would be sparked since Beyonc´e’s Coachella performance has been talked about a lot since the one year anniversary just passed, and her Netflix documentary Homecoming was recently released.
