Taylor Swift took the award for Video of The Year at the VMAs last night and she certainly didn’t hold back in her acceptance speech and rightly so.
Swift took home the award for her You Need To Calm Down video which was dripping in appearances from prominent LGBTQ+individuals, ranging from the Queer Eye cast to Todrick Hall bringing to life the lyrics which were packing with pride: “You just need to take several seats and then try to restore the peace / And control your urges to scream about all the people you hate /’Cause shade never made anybody less gay.”
Taking to the stage after winning her award, Taylor used it to call out the Trump administration for failing to truly acknowledge the call out the Equality Act petition for LGBTQ rights. Taylor even included a call to sign the petition at the end of said video.
With many of the cast from the video surrounding her, Taylor said, “It now has half a million signatures, which is five times the amount that it would need to warrant a response from the White House.” To add to the shade the award winner looked at her wrist as if to gesture she was checking the time on a watch. Yasss Taylor!
Taylor went on to warn the government that there is a wave of change in the air after fans actively voted for You Need To Calm Down to win the award of the night. “In this video several points were made, so you voting for this video means that you want a world, where we’re all treated equally under the law,” Swift passionately said.
But Taylor didn’t leave it there. Hitting the red carpet in Versace some have claimed that her safety pin printed tuxedo dress denoted a further silent protest to the administration. With one saying: “She’s telling women, people of colour, immigrants, Muslims, LGBTQ+, & other marginalized groups that they are safe with her and supported.”
It’s been quite the week for Taylor, following the release of her new album, Lover, last week and we couldn’t be happier for her or the causes she champions.
