Taylor Swift says she almost changed the Christmas lyrics in Lover

Taylor Swift has revealed that she almost changed the Christmas-related lyrics in her hit tune “Lover”.

The singer discussed the song’s genesis in an interview with the New York Times, released on 24 December.

She was asked about the track’s first line, which goes: “We could leave the Christmas lights up ‘til January.”

This particular sentence has caught the attention of some fans, because leaving Christmas lights up until January is customary – meaning that some wondered why the practice was mentioned at all.

Swift herself considered another version of the line, in which the Christmas lights would have stayed up until spring.

“I had toyed with the idea of being like, ‘We could leave the Christmas lights on ‘til April,’” she said.

She then added: “It’s not about that being a crazy thing. It’s about how mundane it is.

“It’s about like, ‘We could put a rug over there. We could do wallpaper or we could do paint.’”

Lover, the album named after the song, was released on 23 August.

Swift is nominated for three awards at the 2020 Grammys, in the Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album categories.
