Taylor Swift debuted at number one with her new album Folklore and we didn’t expect anything else.

The singer secured her fifth consecutive UK number one album and got 37,000 chart sales.

The 30-year-old announced the album hours before dropping it and Taylor’s one of the few elite artists that can reach number one with a surprise project.

From its first week, 67% came from streams while 33% from downloads, according to the Official Charts Company.

Folklore is only available in digital formats until it gets a physical release later in the year.

Taylor even got the biggest week of album downloads this year, surpassing the opening week of Eminem’s Music To Be Murdered By.

Her other chart-topping albums includes Red, 1989, Reputation, and Lover – which came out last year.

How does she do it?

Meanwhile, Ronan Keating followed closely behind with his eleventh studio album Twenty Twenty.

Pop Smoke’s posthumous record Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon was at number three.

Taylor’s new album was such a surprise that even her record label didn’t know about it.

Republic Records apparently weren’t even aware of the new music until hours before it was released to the world.

Taylor worked on the album with Aaron Dessner from the band The National who spoke about what it was like working with a huge superstar under total secrecy.

He told Pitchfork: ‘There was no outside influence at all. In fact, nobody knew, including her label, until hours before it was launched.’
