Tammy Abraham is confident the injury he suffered against Valencia is ‘nothing too serious’.
Chelsea took a step towards the Champions League knockout stages after coming away from the Mestalla with a 2-2 draw on Wednesday evening.
The Group H encounter was a breathless affair from start to finish and Carlos Soler scored the first of the goals as he volleyed past Kepa Arrizabalaga before Mateo Kovacic immediately equalised for the visitors.
Frank Lampard’s men looked on course for victory as Christian Pulisic prodded them ahead and Kepa saved Daniel Parejo’s penalty, but Daniel Wass popped up with a fortuitous late equaliser for the hosts.
Abraham went down right on half-time after an awkward collision with Ezequiel Garay and the young forward appeared in some discomfort as he was stretched off the pitch.
However, Lampard played down the severity of the injury in his post-match interview and Abraham believes he should make a speedy recovery.
‘It’s much better, much better than when it happened,’ the England international told Chelsea TV.
‘At the time I was fearful of the worst, obviously, but when I got in [to the changing room] I was able to walk again, move about. So [I’m] thankful. Hopefully it’s not too long [out injured].
‘I hope [it’s just bruising]. I’ll have a scan tomorrow – or an X-ray, to see what the news is.
‘But hopefully it’s just bruising because at the end of the day I think it was a knee to my hip area, so hopefully it’s nothing too serious.’
Lampard was critical of his players after the match and admitted there was major room for improvement at both ends of the pitch.
‘We nearly won it, nearly lost it. It was end to end, not that we wanted it to be,’ the Chelsea manager told BT Sport.
‘It’s difficult to come here, I know that from coming here as a player. When the atmosphere turns, sometimes you’re hanging on, but it keeps it in our hands.
‘Parts of our performance I’m not mad on. We gave away too many chances. We missed a lot as well. That’s something we’re doing a lot of at the minute – not putting our chances away.
‘But you can’t turn away from fact they had a lot of chances. They were arriving in our box too much.
‘Credit to the players for their work-rate and hanging on in there, but sometimes you have to be more secure than that.’
