But if saving more money was your aim, I shall not let you give up that easily. An easy way to stash cash is with a money-saving challenge.
Here are a few ideas . . .
1p challenge: This one is super-simple. You start out by saving 1p on the first day, 2p on the second, 3p on the third and so on. By day 366 — remember, 2020 is a leap year — you will be saving £3.66 for the day. It adds up to a total of £671.61 for the year.
Fiver challenge: I do like this one, because it is so flexible. Basically, you just set aside any leftover fivers in your purse or wallet. This will build up to quite a bit over the year.
£20 challenge: It is so easy to spend £20 a week on a takeaway or a few drinks down the pub, but this forces you to squirrel it away instead. By saving £20 every Friday, you will have £1,040 by the end of 2020.
52-week challenge: Put away £1 during week one, £2 over week two, £3 on week three . . . you can see where this is going. If you can afford to keep this up, you will be saving £52 by the final week of the year. Overall, you will end up with £1,378.
Loose-change challenge: Similar to the Fiver Challenge, but with coins. Every time you break into a note, put your change in a piggy bank. You will be surprised by how much it adds up to over 12 months.
