Take care of the pennies and save £371.66 a year — plus win the ultimate tech home bundle worth £10,000

IT’S the little things that add up – even a penny a day can make all the difference.

Blogger Francesca De Franco, of theparentsocial.com, reveals how she saves those all-important coppers for a rainy day . . .

Penny challenge: Francesca is a huge fan of the “penny challenge” to put away extra cash. She says: “It’s a really simple idea.

“You start off on any day and save one penny. The next day you save 2p, on day three it’s 3p, and so on. It starts off very gradually but helps you get used to the idea of saving. If you go up like this by a penny a day for a year, you get £371.66. It is good to have that chunk of money at the end of the year.

Switch and save: She says: “I’m a fan of uswitch.com, the energy-focused comparison site.

“Upload your details once and that’s it. You just put in how much gas and electricity you use each year (which you can find on your statement).

“It’s really easy. So far, I am saving £34 a month by using it. I switched to a network I hadn’t even heard of and it has worked out great.”

Fuel for less: It pays to shop around for fuel. Francesca, left, says: “Petrol is a big cost but I can cut this back using petrolprices.com. Put in your postcode and it shows your nearest petrol stations, telling you how much they are charging per litre.

“We’ve got quite a big car. We are saving around £4.22 by driving 0.2 of a mile and filling up at a different garage.”

Net worth: Who doesn’t love an online shop? But if you are cutting back and trying to save, make sure you are getting the most out of any necessities you buy online.

Francesca says: “Never shop for anything online without first searching for a discount code. Sometimes all it takes is signing up to a newsletter. It is also worth checking on sites such as Groupon for deals at the online retailers you already use, or for items you are already keen on buying.

“I would say that eight times out of ten you can find money off before checking out.”
