Take a breather, denim! Broderie anglaise is officially the fabric of summer (and ASOS sold over 90,000 pieces last month)

Animal print, neon, tie-dye… we all fall for trends every now and then, and more often than not it’s a pattern or a print that we share mutual appreciation for. This season, however, it’s fabric that’s having a moment. More specifically, broderie anglaise, or ‘English embroidery’ for the unilinguals amongst us.

Once the uniform of sweet young children in the late 1880s, it saw its first major resurgence in the 1950s – a comeback that was cemented in 1959 when Brigitte Bardot wore a dress of gingham and broderie anglaise for her wedding to Jacques Charrier.

A more robust, day-wear take on lace, it is the perfect fabric to zhush up everything from a collared blouse to a puff-sleeved midi, and is especially valuable when it comes to the often-monotonous summer holiday wardrobe.

Unsurprisingly, one of the first major labels to indulge in the trend this season is e-tailer giant ASOS, whose in-house ‘Design’ label caught on quickly and have capitalised on the appetite by launching broderie anglaise pieces in almost every incarnation imaginable.

And while the fabric may typically be used in low-key, neutral tones, the team at ASOS have elevated their offering and acknowledged another of the season’s major trends via several punchy neon pieces.

Speaking exclusively to GLAMOUR UK, the Head of Design at ASOS said: “Originally we loved anything broderie as part of the neutral tones trend in true cotton and milk maid light weight fabrics, but after seeing broderie in neons and fun brights we couldn’t resist adding them into the collection too.”

And it’s clearly working, with the online powerhouse confirming that throughout March they sold over 90,000 units.
