Tackle limescale in your home without breaking the bank with our savvy tips

LEAVING the tough cleaning jobs too long can leave YOU with a big bill.

Limescale build-up can cost up to £180 a year, according to Harvey Water Softeners, because it shortens the lifespan of household appliances.

To scale back the cost, I asked Harvey’s Toby Jones for some tips.

AVOID FANCY PRODUCTS: Start with a regular limescale cleaner from stores. Toby says: “They are cheap but read the label properly to make sure it is suitable to use on the affected area.”

My tip: Oust all-purpose descaler is just £1.40 at Asda and does a great job.

RAID KITCHEN CUPBOARDS: Toby says: “One of the most effective ways to remove limescale is with natural items such as vinegar or lemon juice, which break down limescale easily. All you need to do is soak the affected area for at least an hour — that bit is really important — after which the limescale should wipe away.”

My tip: Pick up a refillable spray bottle from Wilko for just £1 then use it with your vinegar or lemon solution to spray the affected areas.

CHECK THE WINE RACK: “White wine works wonders on limescale. It removes limescale naturally by breaking down the calcium carbonate so it can easily be cleaned.

“The only tricky part here comes if you are cleaning vertical glass. That makes soaking the affected area difficult. This can be solved, though. Just apply a little more wine and repeat the process a few times until the stains wipe away.”

My tip: Grab yourself a squeegee to wipe away residue for a high shine. Ikea has them for 75p.

TACKLE THE PROBLEM HEAD-ON: “The best way to prevent limescale build-up is to prevent the hard water that causes limescale from being present in the first place,” says Toby.

“Installing a non-electric water softener is a simple solution and is also longer-lasting than any manual cleaning method.”

My tip: Harvey will also let you trial or rent a softener to see if it works for you.
